Based on finding of preliminary study the teaching writing at MAN Tambakberas Jombang has not facilitated students to be skilled in writing yet. The students writings contain several mistakes. Therefore the researcher is greatly motivated to overcome the problem by implementing Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition Strategy at improving the students writing ability. The study employs Collaborative Classroom Action Research design. The researcher works together with a collaborative teacher in designing the lesson plan implementing the action observing the action and making reflection. The study is carried out research in two cycles each of which consists of two meetings. The first meeting focuses on prewriting activity while the second meeting focuses on the whilst-writing and post writing activities. The subjects of the study are 40 Eleventh Grade Students of MAN Tambakberas Jombang (XI IPS4) in 2008/2009 academic year and it is concentrated on hortatory exposition text. The data of the study are taken from the results of the observation checklists field notes and the students final test of writing hortatory exposition text which are taken from the writing task given at the end of the cycle. The research show that the implementation of Cooperative integrated Reading and Composition strategy can improve the students writing ability which can be seen from the improvement of the student s writing achievement. In the preliminary study the average score of the student writing achievement is 61.20 or 30 students (75%) have not achieved the minimum mastery criterion 70 yet. After implementing the strategy in Cycle 1 the average score increases to 68.03 or 19 students (52.5%) have not achieved the minimum mastery criterion and it has not met the criteria of success yet. Then in Cycle 2 the average score increases to 72.00 or only 9 students (22.5%) have not achieved the criteria of success and it means that about 31 students (77.5%) have met the criteria of success (75% students achieve the score greater than or equal to 70). In addition the students are actively involved in writing task activities. Referring to the above findings the following suggestions are proposed. First the English teachers are recommended to apply Cooperative integrated Reading and Composition strategy in teaching writing. Second since the study is action research it is advisable that future researchers follow up these findings by conducting a further action research in other text types in different level of the students. Third the researcher hopes that the study gives more contributions to the teaching of writing in the school and motivates other researchers to conduct further research on the other models of Cooperative Learning strategy.
