With regard to its pronunciation the English language is quite difficult for Indonesian learners. For students whose native language is Javanese they are probably influenced by the fundamental differences between Javanese language and English. This present study tried to find out the effectiveness of English songs in improving the ability in pronouncing English diphthongs of students with Javanese language background. The subjects of this study were the students of Class X-9 SMAN 1 Lawang studying in the 2009/2010 academic year. The students were divided into two groups the experimental and control groups using a quasi-experimental design. The experimental group consists of 16 students and the control group consists of 15 students. There were two kinds of instruments used to collect the data they were test and questionnaire. The tests used were pre-test and post-test. Both tests used a text Shot Widow Speaks of Torture taken from Break into English Students Book 4. The questionnaire consists of 9 close-ended response questions. The treatments used in this study were Avril Lavigne s songs. They were I m with You Skater Boy and When You re Gone. These songs were chosen based on the result of students questionnaire and English diphthongs which were needed to be improved. The quantitative data from the pre-test and post-test were calculated using t-test for pooled and separated samples. The findings of the post-test of the experimental and control groups were significantly different with the t value was 3.65669 for df 14. It showed that the use of English songs was effective in improving the ability in pronouncing English diphthongs of students with Javanese language background. Avril Lavigne s songs can be used as the alternative teaching media to motivate and encourage students to involve and participate in the teaching and learning process. The researcher suggested that the similar thesis be conducted by researchers who have new ideas. It is better to use different songs or to apply in different level of education to develop the ideas.
