An analysis of idiom translation appropriateness in the Indonesian translation of the novel Band of Brothers / Suryo Waskito

Abstrak
ABSTRACT Waskito Suryo. 2010. An Analysis of Idiom Translation Appropriateness in the Indonesian Translation of the Novel Band of Brothers. This thesis is a study of the appropriateness of Indonesian idiom translation of the novel Band of Brothers. The data of English idioms and their Indonesian translations were collected from the first three chapters of the original and translated version of the novel. The data were analyzed by classifying the idioms into three categories based on a classification proposed by Boatner and Gates (1975 v-vi). The result of this data collection showed that the idioms are in the form of phrasal idiom (type 1) and phraseological idiom (type 2). The phrasal idioms are translated using 7 of the 13 translation strategies classified by Haryanto (2009) while the phraseological idioms are translated using 5 of the 13 strategies. The translation appropriateness was analyzed by determining the translation error which leads into 6 types of translation results classified by Sager (1983 127). Those strategies of phrasal idiom results in 4 of the 6 types of translation results (omitted added deviated and accurate translation). The accurate translation of the phrasal idioms are the result of three translation strategies naturalization literal translation and descriptive equivalent and the deviated translations are caused by the application of naturalization synonymy and literal translation. Meanwhile the omission of phrasal idiom translation is caused by reduction and componential analysis and added translation is the result of cultural equivalent. Similarly the translation of phraseological idioms results in 4 of the 6 types of translation results (omitted deviated modified and accurate translation). The accurate translation is caused by the application of naturalization and cultural equivalent. In contrast deviated omitted and modified translations are found in the translation of 13 phraseological idioms. This deviation is caused by reduction literal translation and naturalization and the omitted translation is caused by reduction and modulation strategies. The application of literal translation is the cause of modified translation. This study was limited to analyzing the translation appropriateness of idiom translation of the novel Band of Brothers. There are many chances for future researcher to do some study in relation to idiom translation of different literary works or the same novel by applying a different approach or analysis.
