The speaking skill of the eighth graders of RSBI and regular programs at SMPN 5 Malang / Lita Cempaka

ABSTRACT Cempaka Lita. 2010. The Speaking Skill of the Eighth Graders of RSBI and Regular Programs at SMPN 5 Malang. Thesis English Department Faculty of Letters State University of Malang. Key words Speaking Skill RSBI Program Regular Program This study is aimed to describe the difference of the speaking skill of the eighth graders of RSBI and Regular Programs in SMPN 5 Malang. The RSBI Program is known for the use of English in Science Math and Technology subjects while the Regular Program uses English only in General English subject. Thus it can be seen that there are more hours for RSBI students to practice English. Because of the effective hours for English are different this study is also aimed to give evidence on the assumption about the higher level of competence achieved by RSBI students. This study is quantitative. The aspects which were used to determine the quality of the speaking skill are fluency accuracy pronunciation stress and intonation. There are four instruments which were used in this study an interview list a tape recorder a speaking rubric and a scoring guide. The interview list consists of questions used in the interview and the speaking of the students were recorded by a tape recorder while speaking rubric and scoring guide were used for the basis to rating the speaking skill. The findings of the study reveal that the speaking skill of the students from RSBI and Regular Program are in the same position good. Around 44% RSBI students and 43.1% Regular students attained good. The others varied with excellent very good and fair quality. The means within both classes (84 and 82) also show that they belonged to the same quality good. Though most of the students from both programs attained good there are more Regular students who attained excellent than those from RSBI program. It is influenced by some factors. There are around 94% Regular students who like English and around 88% RSBI students who like English. In addition 98% Regular students do practices and only 93% RSBI students who do it. The students also have additional lessons outside the school but the percentages of the students who take it are quite small. The teaching techniques used in two programs are different. Thus interest practices teaching techniques and additional lessons influence the development of the speaking skill. From the findings it can be concluded that the speaking skill of RSBI students is not higher than Regular students. Their qualities are almost the same. It is possible that the practice and the effort of the students in learning English are not maximum. Thus it is suggested for the teachers to always monitor the development of the students communicative competence discuss together the appropriate techniques and facilities used in the class in order to increase the students interest and motivation towards learning English make a learning-trip or invite native speakers to train the students with the real situation and try to use 100% English in the classroom. Following the suggestions the level of competence of the students is hoped to be better than now. i
