Most of the students were reluctant to participate in their English class. In preliminary study there were eight students who did not participated actively . Thus board games was selected as an alternative strategy to solve the problems. To specify it was a Snake and Ladder game which is modified by putting some questions on the board to help students learn and get involved in their English class. This study aimed at finding out whether board games could improve the fourth grade students participation of SDN 02 Seneporejo Banyuwangi. This study was a classroom action research which consisted of two cycles each of which consisted of two meetings. The second cycle was done by doing some improvement on the questions and game equipment (dice and markers). Each cycle consisted of three stages pre-activity main activity and post-activity. The subject of the study was the fourth grade students of SDN 02 Seneporejo Banyuwangi. The data were collected using an interview guide observation checklist and questionnaire and then analyzed descriptively. Based on the research findings it was found that board games effectively improved the students participation in English class. All students participated actively (reached the criteria of success). Moreover the majority of the students gave positive response towards the implementation of board games in this case 71.4% of the students showed that they were interested in board games. Generally all of them were so attracted to this game and thus participated more in English classes. It helps students to get more involved and makes the class less monotonous and more interesting. It is suggested that the teacher use the board games in teaching and learning process since it can improve the students participation. It is also suggested that other researchers conduct further research that apply other board games.
