Suyanto M.A. Ph.D. Key words English action songs active participation collaborative action research The study was designed to improve the active participation of second graders at SDN KARANGBESUKI I MALANG through the implementation of English action songs in the teaching and learning process. It is a technique and it is selected because it is able to encourage the students to be actively involved and motivated in the English class activities. Therefore the research problem is How can the active participation of second graders of SDN KARANGBESUKI I MALANG be improved through the implementation of English action songs This study employed collaborative action research design in which the researcher and the collaborative teacher worked together in designing the lesson plans implementing the action and making the reflection. The subjects of the study were 45 second grade students of SDN KARANGBESUKI I MALANG of 2009-2010 academic year. This study was conducted in two cycles by following the procedure of the action research namely planning implementing observing and reflecting. In Cycle 1 there were 3 meetings while in Cycle 2 there were 2 meetings. The data of the study were obtained from the results of the observation checklists and forms interviews teacher s daily journal and the field notes which were taken during the implementation of the action. The procedures of implementing English action songs technique in the teaching and learning process were 1) writing session 2) listening session 3) reading session and 4) speaking session. The findings of the study show that the implementation of English action songs is effective in improving the active participation of the students. It can be seen on the data gained from the observation checklists on the students activities indicating the active participation in the class. In the preliminary study it was found that only 4-5 ((8.89%-11.11%) students who were active in the English class activities. However in the Cycle 2 there was improvement that there were 41 students (90.48%) who actively participated in the activities done in the classroom. Both the students and the teacher were actively involved in the teaching and learning process during the implementation of English action songs. The students were highly motivated in learning English in the class and enjoyed singing English action songs.
