Abstrak
Key words Van Hiele Theory Two-dimensional Flat Object Concept Students Ability The Mathematics teaching and learning process for fifth graders in SDN Candirenggo 05 Kecamatan Singosari Kabupaten Malang has been less active since the Mathematics teacher still uses lecturing method and dominates the class during the learning process. This condition led to the low average of students score with only 55 from the scale of 100. Consequently the teaching and learning process has become monotonous which makes the students become less interested they cannot fulfill the minimum standard of 65 that was ruled by the school as well. This problem has been addressed with the application of Van Hiele theory which is used for teaching the concept of two-dimensional flat object to the fifth graders to improve students activity ability and achievement in learning mathematics. This research is aimed to improve both students ability and achievement in learning mathematics in terms of two-dimensional flat object used Van Hiele theory. The statements of the problems are as follows (1) How is the application of Van Hiele theory possibly improving fifth graders ability of SDN Candirenggo 05 Kecamatan Singosari Kabupaten Malang in understanding two-dimensional flat object concept (2) Does the application of Van Hiele theory positively improve fifth graders ability of SDN Candirenggo 05 Kecamatan Singosari Kabupaten Malang ability in understanding two-dimensional flat object concept and (3) Does the application of Van Hiele Theory improve fifth graders activity of SDN Candirenggo 05 Kecamatan Singosari Kabupaten Malang ability in learning two-dimensional flat object s geometry In teaching two-dimensional flat object used Van Hiele theory the students are hoped to be actively involved. This research uses developed simple research as follows (1) doing tasks (2) doing research through demonstrations and (3) taking conclusions. This research is designed in the classroom-action research with cycles mode developed by Kemmis and McTaggart (in Rochiati 2006 66) which covers plan action observation and reflection. The subject of this research is all fifth graders in SDN Candirenggo 05 Kecamatan Singosari Kabupaten Malang while the guidance used in this research are observation interview written test and documentation. This classroom-action research covers 2 cycles of individual activity ranging from pre-cycle until cycle II which successfully improves students achievement learning results and activity. The gained scores are improving from 55 in the Pre-cycle to 67.66 in Cycle I and finally 86.33 in Cycle II. In the percentage the final achievement score is 26.67% (8 students) during the Pre-cycle to 56.67% (17 students) in Cycle I and finally reaches 90% (27 students) in Cycle II. The continuing action is not carried to the next cycle since the students has already fulfilled the minimum standard score ruled by the school which is 65. Teaching two-dimensional flat object through the application of Van Hiele theory is positively improving both students achievement and ability where they can also be actively involved. It even works well when the teacher/ researcher apply demonstration method varied with exercise method question and answer method task distribution method and group discussion method. For those who have not applied the Van Hiele theory are suggested to do so that the mathematic teaching and learning process related to two-dimensional flat object will be successful. In addition students are also hoped to fulfill minimum score standard ruled by the school.
