Classroom interaction in the speaking class at IAI Ibrahimy Situbondo / Ukhtul Iffah

Abstrak
Keywords Classroom Interaction Pattern of Classroom Interaction Communication Strategy. Interaction has an important role in conducting the teaching learning process especially in promoting successful the teaching and learning process in the Speaking class The present research was carried out in order to investigate the classroom interaction that occurs in the Speaking class. The objectives of this present research are 1) to describe ways the teacher stimulates and encourages the students to interact in the classroom 2) to identify the patterns of interactions that occur in the classroom interaction in the speaking class 3) to describe the communication strategies the teacher and the students employ during the classroom interaction in the process of teaching and learning speaking skill in the classroom. Descriptive-qualitative research design was adopted to answer those questions. In this case the researcher herself was as the main instrument of the study. The data of the study were the utterances produced by the teacher and the students during the classroom interaction in Speaking class at IAI Ibrahimy Situbondo. In collecting the data the researcher used a video recorder an interview guide observation sheets and field notes. In this study a triangulation of the source the data the theory and the methodology was employed to check the trustworthiness of the study. The findings of the study in general can be stated that the classroom interaction that occurred in the Speaking class was adequate. It means that the teacher and the students interacted in the classroom interactively and communicatively. The teacher employed most aspects of existing theories of FLINT model proposed by Flanders and Moskowitz in the teaching learning process to make her talk comprehensible to the students i.e 1) giving information 2) giving direction and 3) criticizing students response 4) praising or encouraging and joking 5) using ideas of the students and 6) asking questions. By applying the various interaction the teacher can stimulate and encourage the students to interact in the Speaking class. It also created a good atmosphere in the classroom in order that the students were not bored and finally they did not hesitate to deliver their idea. Meanwhile the patterns that occurred during the classroom interaction are 1) the teacher to whole class 2) the individual student to the individual student and 3) the teacher to the individual student. The first pattern always happened in the beginning as an opening and as the giving feedback in the teaching learning process. The second pattern mostly occurred whenever the students were in a small group discussion. The last pattern was employed by the teacher when she gave further questions to the students who delivered their opinion in the free Speaking activity. To overcome the communication problems during the classroom interaction the teacher applied four strategies namely paraphrasing restructuring miming and repetition. While the students used the six communicating strategies they were message abandonment code switching restructuring appealing miming and repetition. Based on the result of the findings some suggestions are proposed to the teachers both the English and Arabic teachers of Intensive Foreign Language Programs and also for all teachers in general and also to the Institution namely IAI Ibrahimy Situbondo. For the teachers in general 1) she should give a chance to the students to ask personally in order that they have self confidence bravery to deliver their problems to the teacher. It is the application of the individual student to the teacher pattern that did not occur during the study 2) in giving correction the teacher should ask the students who make some mistakes to identify their error as the stimulation for them to be aware about their error and asked them to correct by themselves before the teacher informed the correct one or the teacher ask them to make peer correction 3) the topic should be in line with the student s interest. Meanwhile for the Institution of Intensive Foreign Language Programs namely IAI Ibrahimy Situbondo it is expected to support and facilitate as well as possible to make classroom interaction interactive.
