A proposed syllabus for TEYL course for the students of English education department at Ganesha University of Education / Ni Luh Putu Eka Sulistia Dewi

Abstrak
Key words syllabus TEYL TEYL Course The changing of curriculum in English Education Department at Ganesha University of Education had influenced the recently used syllabus for TEYL Course. Referring to the limitations of the recent TEYL syllabus in terms of the development of the objectives the limited learning sources deals with the time allocated the methods/techniques applied and the assessment mechanism the urgency to develop the proposed syllabus is demanded. Thus the Research and Development research design was applied to develop a proposed syllabus for TEYL Course for the students of English Education Department at Ganesha University of Education. From the need analysis conducted in the research and information collection stage it was found that the proposed syllabus was developed in the frame of integrated syllabus. It integrated the competency-based content-based and task-based syllabi. The objectives of the TEYL Course were to make the students able to gain theoretical and practical knowledge on teaching English to young learners and apply them in peer teaching practice that affect the students performance on teaching English in real class at primary schools. Fourteen topics that covered both theoretical and practical knowledge on TEYL were included in the content of the syllabus to meet the objectives. They were sequenced from the simplest to the most complex ones from general to the more specific. Supported by related theories the methods included in the syllabus for the course which was offered for the fifth semester students with four credits and four meeting hours per week were interactive lectures question-answer discussion presentations demonstration modeling performance class exhibition peer and lecturer reviews school visit and report writing. Audio visual and audio-visual instructional media were included to link the students experiences with the instructional materials. Finally the assessment covered both product (project test and school visit report writing) and process assessment (performance on teaching practice demonstration participation and attendance). Overall based on the result of experts validation and the field test on product development stage it could be concluded that the final product the proposed syllabus equipped with introduction course outline meeting schedule and unit lessons was considered as appropriate to be applied in TEYL Course for the students of English Education Department at Ganesha University of Education. As a final point the syllabus proposed is expected to be beneficial to improve the ability of prospective teachers in particular which indirectly will support the quality improvement of the English teachers in primary schools in general.
