Abstrak
This studyi s conductedin ordert o find out how ElizabethG askellp erceives the socialc lassesin Englandd uringt he VictorianA ge in termso f the social interactionsa mongc lassest h e life style a ndt he socialm obility asp resentedin Cranford There are several theories used in this study. I ernploy BzLes interaction processa nalysisi n order to classify the categorieso f social interaction.I employt he objectivem ethod in classifting the characters s ocial classesB. esides I also employ Ross theory of imitation and types of social mobility theory. This study is conducted usingc ontenta nalysism ethodi n which all dataa rec lassifiedin to severatlh emest h e cbarasterss ocial classest h e social nteraction amongc lassest h e lifestyle andt he social mobility. In the novel entitled Cranford I find out that Gaskell sees that the classificationo f peoplei n Englandl ed to somef ollies.D ue to the existenceo f the socialc lassesG askellp erceivesth rought he Cranfordiansth at the Victoriansb rought severacl haracteristicsT.h eyw ereh ypocriticala nds nobbishT. he upperc lasses tendedt o underestimatea nd despiset he lower classesO. n the other hand t he lower classeste ndedt o respectt he upperc lassest oo much. The lower classesa lsoh ada tendencyto imitatet he upperc lassesl i festyle although they were too poor to do so. They also tried to conceal their poverty by appearingri ch. Thereforet h eyc ondemnedth e talkingo f povertyi n public.D ealing with social rnobility Gaskell sees that some people were eager to move upward. However s omehow t he eagernestso move upwardm ight have led into a folly. On the social mobility Gaskell perceives that the upper class and the lower class attitudesto wards ocialm obility varied.S omeo f the upperc lassp eopled isliked vertical downward mobility while the lower class people tended to accepthe mobility. After atnlyzingthe novel I have noticed that there are still many points of the novel that can be analysed.T he studentso fEnglish literature can analyset he characterpss ychologicallyT. heyc ana lsoa nalyseth e Unitarianismin this novel. Since Gaskell is a Unitarian she might bring her belief into her works. They can also analyseth e extrinsica ndi ntrinsice lementso f the novels.H owever I haven oticed that many studentsa nd even lecturerso fEnglish literaturea re cluelessa bout ElizabethG askella nd her works.
