Code switching used by the host of \"Ala Chef\" / Hendrix Mey Chrismawanto

Abstrak
Keywords code switching and ala chef This study aims at investigating code switching used by the host of Ala Chef . Ala Chef is the name of cooking program on television that is broadcasted on Transtv at 10.00 am - 10.30 am on Saturday and Sunday. This study is mainly intended to identify the types of code switching used by the host of Ala Chef . Then the reasons of code switching are presented under the discussions of the types of code switching. The design of this study is descriptive qualitative and the subject of this study is the host of Ala Chef . The data of this study is in the form of written recorded utterances when the host is presenting the programs from February 14th 2010 to March 7th 2010. The writer collected 308 data that contain code switching. Data collection was done by recording the Ala Chef program transferring the record into computer and transcribing the recorded utterances identifying and marking the utterances that consist of Indonesian-English code switching. The host of Ala Chef program is Farah Quinn. She has a full name Farah Fauzan Quinn. She was born in Bandung on April 8th 1980. Her career are (1) Host a program called Ala Chef since November 2008 (2) Establishing a restaurant Camus in 2005 (3) Chef at Lydia s Pittsburgh Pennsylvania (4) Pastry expert at Arizona Biltmore Resort Phoenix Arizona and (5) Chef at G-8 summit in Sea Island Georgia 2005. The results show that there are three types of code switching which are used by the host of Ala Chef they are intra-sentential inter-sentential and making emblematic. Intra-sentential has the highest frequency of the occurrence from the data because the host of Ala Chef often switches her language in a sentence. Since Farah Quinn has been studying in USA for years it is easy for her to switch her language from Indonesian into English or vice versa. It is suggested that the sociolinguistics students can critically analyze the switching language occurs on television. It is also suggested that the results of this study can be used as reference for the future researchers in exploring and expanding the investigation of some other phenomena of code switching on television show.
