A content analysis on \"Wonderful World\" an English textbook for eleventh graders of senior high schools / Fatima Setiawati
Abstrak
Key words Textbook EFL book criteria This study is an attempt to analyze how much the English textbook entitled Wonderful World for SMA / MA students grade XI meets the requirements of good EFL textbook criteria in terms of language content and skills communicative aspects authenticity of the dialogs and reading texts practice materials sequence and gradation and technicalities. Since the study concerns with the analysis of the content document materials it is designed as descriptive-evaluative content analysis. This study combines two types of data qualitative data and quantitative data. The source of the data is the English textbook - Wonderful World for SMA / MA students grade XI. The instrument used are checklist and analysis form. Based on the findings it was found the textbook is classified as good in terms of language content and skills. Then the textbook is classified as very good in terms of communicative aspects. Next the textbook is classified as fair in terms of sequenced and gradation and quality of practice materials. Moreover the textbook is classified as poor in terms of technicalities and classified as very poor in terms of authenticity of the reading text and dialogues. In other words the textbook is classified as fair in terms of EFL good textbook criteria. On the basis of the findings suggestions can be offered to the English teachers especially the English teachers of eleventh graders who use Wonderful World English textbook in their class to use the textbook creatively take advantage of the strength of the textbook and adapt the materials to compensate the weaknesses of the textbook. Moreover suggestions are also directed to the writer of the textbook to do some improvement in the future. Future researchers are suggested to do further studies on other textbook.
