Teacher talk in giving information in RSBI physics class at SMPN 3 Malang / Muhammad Islahuddin

Abstrak
Key words teacher-talk giving information RSBI physics class Having qualified teachers for Rintisan Sekolah Bertaraf Internasional (RSBI) science class is very important for schools that implement RSBI program. However according to some studies most of RSBI science teachers are not adequately qualified for the program. They are unable to conduct good classroom interaction and use English as a mean of class interaction. In order to know further about this problem this current study was conducted to identify and describe teacher-talk in giving information in two RSBI Physics classes at SMPN 3 Malang. This study is an attempt to answer two main questions (1) what types of information were given by the teacher in the process of teaching and learning Physics in RSBI class at SMPN 3 Malang based on the giving-information category of teacher-talk in the FLINT model (2) What methods were used by the teacher in delivering the information in the process of teaching and learning Physics in RSBI class at SMPN 3 Malang based on the giving-information category of teacher-talk in the FLINT model The subject of the study is a Physics teacher of two RSBI classes VII RSBI A and VII RSBI B. In the present study the researcher is considered as the main instrument because he is the one who collects and analyzes the data. In addition the researcher also used observation sheet interview guide and questionnaire as the instruments to gain precise data in this study. The main data of the study are the utterances produced by the teacher in giving information to the students. The main data were taken during the teaching-learning process in the class. These main data were collected through observation and recording the teacher talk in giving information in four meetings. To support the main data secondary data were also collected through an interview with the Physics teacher and a student questionnaire. The data analysis was done in four steps namely data collection data reduction data display and conclusion drawing. The result of the research shows that the teacher gave all types of information mentioned in the giving-information category in the FLINT model i.e. (1) information (39.3%) (2) fact (23.5%) (3) teacher s opinion (13.7%) and (4) teacher s idea (23.5%). Of these four types of information the first information is the most frequently given by the teacher to give the students the basic information related to the subject. The findings also show that the teacher employed the two methods of giving information mentioned in the giving-information category in the FLINT model i.e. (1) lecturing (64.8%) and (2) asking rhetorical question (35.2%). The lecturing method of all the three types i.e. (1) content-driven (2) context-driven and (3) pedagogy-driven was frequently used by the teacher to convey the information to the students. The three types of rhetorical question i.e. (1) imperative (2) declarative and (3) affirmative rhetorical question were less frequently used by the teacher. The findings of this study mostly support the existing theories of teachertalk in giving information. As can be seen in the findings the teacher in this study applied the four kinds of information and the two methods of giving information as suggested by Moskowitz (1971). For the teacher it is suggested that in giving information activities the teacher needs to give all kinds of information proportionally tries to use the other method to convey the materials and uses English regularly in class. For SMPN 3 Malang it is suggested to be more serious in managing every aspect of RSBI program and to provide science teachers of RSBI with a training course in English for natural science. For the future researcher(s) it is suggested to investigate the teacher-talk in giving information in other subjects.
