The media used for teaching biology in bilingual class of grade VII at SMP Negeri 2 Malang / Lutfiyan Khusyabaroh
Abstrak
Key words Media Used Bilingual Class English is not only taught as important subject in the school it is also used as media communication in bilingual class. Because English is still a foreign language for us the English teachers work harder to make the students understand English better. Moreover in bilingual class the students have to use English as medium of communication for some bilingual subjects they are physics biology and mathematics. The bilingual teachers deliver the material using English. Therefore they use some instructional media to help them in explaining the material. In this study the researcher just observes biology class. The researcher observes the media used for teaching biology of grade VII. The study takes place in VII I because the students are very active and easy to cooperate. This study is needed because the findings are important especially for the school teacher and students of bilingual class in SMP Negeri 2 Malang in particular and other RSBI schools in general. This study is designed descriptively. It was conducted to describe the media used in teaching biology subject using English as medium of communication in bilingual class at SMP Negeri 2 Malang. The school was chosen because it provides four bilingual classes. The study aims at (1) describing kinds of media used (2) the teacher s considerations in choosing certain kinds of media and (3) the students opinion of the media used. The findings show that only visual media was used. There are no audio media and audiovisual media. The media used for teaching biology in bilingual class are module slides (computer) game (Monopoly) and pictures. All of the media were successful in helping the teacher. However the game monopoly was the most interesting media based on the students and teacher s opinion. The conclusions of the study are the students pay more attention to the lesson and motivated to study harder. Based on the observations the researcher has four suggestions they are the school has to provide appropriate loud speakers the teacher has to vary the audio and audiovisual media use appropriate picture media and join workshop related to media used in bilingual class.
