Utilizing English songs to improve the listening ability of the eight graders of SMPN 1 Besuk Probolinggo / Wahyu Rachmat Hidayat
Abstrak
Keywords English songs Listening Ability Action Research The objective of teaching English in SMP based on the 2006 Standard of Content is that the students can develop their communicative competence both in oral and written forms to achieve a certain functional literacy stage. It involves four skills listening speaking reading and writing. For this purpose a learner must develop the language skills needed in communication namely listening speaking reading and writing. Concerning those statements the researcher found that listening had not proper attention in the teaching of English. In relation to this problem this study was intended to describe how utilizing English songs can improve the listening ability of the eighth graders of SMPN I Besuk Probolinggo. The design of this study was Classroom Action Research which consisted of two cycles because in the second cycle the criterion of success was achieved. Each of them consisted of three meetings for teaching and learning process and one meeting for quiz. This research used Kemmis and Mc Taggart s model of Classroom Action Research which consisted of planning implementing observing and reflecting. The subject of the research was 37 students of the eighth graders class A at SMPN 1 Besuk. The data were collected through the following instruments listening test students notes interview guide and field notes. The researcher then formulated the research problem which was How can the utilization of English songs to improve the listening ability of the eighth graders of SMPN I Besuk Probolinggo. The students scores gradually increased from preliminary test to the listening test administered after two cycles of the study. The mean score of preliminary test was 47 in the first listening test was 56 and in the second listening test was 62. In Cycle II the classroom set-up was changed here the students who had problem in Cycle I were moved on the first row. For the third meeting in second cycle the teacher asked the students to tell the most beautiful vacation spot. Then the teacher told Maribeth s experience. Next the teacher distributed students worksheet and asked the students to do work. In whilst-activities the song was played three times. The first the students just listened while the song was playing. The second the students wrote the answer while the song was playing with some pauses. The last the students did correction while the song was playing again for the last. Next the teacher gave opportunity to the students to write their answers on the white board and the teacher checked their answers. In post activities they sang together and the teacher ended the lesson by asking if students had questions. Based on the research findings it was concluded that the implementation of utilizing English songs in teaching listening comprehension could improve the students listening ability. Therefore it is suggested that English teachers use English songs for their strategy especially to improve the listening ability of the students. For the school especially the principal is suggested to hold a workshop to introduce utilizing English songs technique to the secondary school because this technique was good to be implemented to the junior students. For other researchers it is also suggested that they use the results of this research as reference.
