The Teaching of english at the accleration class at SMAN 4 Malang / Desy Sulistiyana
Abstrak
Key words Teaching English acceleration class Learning a foreign language is not an instant process because students need to develop language competences. It means that learning English as a foreign language need more practices. Therefore it becomes interesting discussion to know the teaching English process in the acceleration class where the students study shortened to two years in junior/ senior high school. This study was intended to describe the teaching process of English in acceleration class at grade X at SMAN 4 Malang in terms of the teaching materials media teaching techniques and assessment used. The objective of this study was to describe the teaching process in the acceleration class with a focused on the teacher. This study is descriptive qualitative research. In this case the researcher used several data collection. They were from observation interview and questionnaire which were supported by some instruments such as observation sheet interview guide and questionnaire. The observation was done for two weeks on February 9 February 12 February 16 and February 19. During the observation the researcher did not participate or take an active part in the teaching and learning process. For the interview the researcher grouped the question into four type based on the research problems. It was done to get information that could not be covered from the observation. Questionnaire was also used to collect the deeper information needed from the students. From the findings it could be explained that the teacher used the required textbook entitled Interlanguage and some other additional materials which supported the curriculums applied in SMAN 4 Malang. The additional materials were mostly taken from the internet and newspaper. The teacher used several media in her teaching i.e visual audio and audio-visual media. For the common media used was audio visual media like movies. She never used language laboratory in her teaching in the acceleration class. Most of the teaching media at SMAN 4 Malang were in bad condition. For the teaching technique the teacher used several teaching technique they are presentation question answer role play techniques. She never conducted the teaching learning process outside the classroom. The teacher also used assessment which was divided into two types they were ongoing assessment and formal assessment. The ongoing assessment was used to check the students performance during the teaching and learning process. The formal assessment was two kinds i.e they were formative and summative assessment. The formative assessment was in the form of quizzes and homework and summative assessment was in the form of mid term test and final test. The teacher in the acceleration class did not use anecdotal record to draw the students improvement in the teaching of English. It could be concluded that the selected materials media teaching techniques and assesstment used by the eacher at the accelaration class had some strength and weaknesses. On the selection of materials and media the teacher had selected the materials which were appropriate to KTSP and Cambridge curriculum while for the media chosen matched teh teaching objective opic and the materials. In terms of teh media the teacher never use language laboratory during the teaching of English a the acceleration class. For the teaching techniques the tecaher in the acceleration class used sevral techniques in every meeting and combined the tecnique to make the teaching and learning process more interesting. To assess the students improvement in the teaching of English the tecaher assess both the students performance and works. For the weakness in assessing the students performance she did not use anecdotal note as instrument. Based on the research findings some suggestions were given for the English teacher in the acceleration class the school or principal and for the futureresearchers. The teacher needs to give printed materials as homework invite the students to study outside and use anecdotal record in the process of the assessment. For the school the school needs to give an opportunity for the teacher in the acceleration class to choose the textbook used in the teaching of English. The school also needs to fix all the teaching media. For the next researchers they may conduct the research about the same aspect with other focus.
