Keywords Poem Stylistics Structural Features Poetic Features LiterarySignificance Language holds an important role in a literary text. Language in poetry is employed for its aesthetic qualities in addition to its semantic content. Poetry uses unusual words to convey meanings emotions or ideas to the readers or listeners. Revealing the meaning of a poem is not simple therefore evaluating a poem structurally is not only the aim of understanding the meaning. As a result stylistic analysis is regarded as a good device in exploring and understanding poem. This research aims to find out the structural and poetic features and the literary significance of John Hollander s poems. The researcher in this study selected Hollander s poems Adam s Task Swan and Shadow and For 8213 Fiddle-de-dee 8214 as the subject of her study and chose stylistic approach in examining these poems. Stylistics is the study of style and the methods used in written language as a means of analyzing works of literature and their effects. The research was conducted by a qualitative approach in which this study describes the structural features of Hollander s three poems and explains their literary significance. The researcher becomes the key instrument while two other supporting instruments are observation sheets and forms for the data that were taken from the internet. When the data were collected at the same time the data which were not relevant to the focus of the study would also be reduced. Furthermore the data were displayed by a summary narration or in the forms of symbols or graphics. After conducting the data reduction and data display the researcher went ahead to draw conclusion or versification. This research presents three findings which are simply the answers to the research questions. The first conclusion is about the structural features in the poems. Phonologically the form in the poems get foregrounded by means of alliteration and assonance while syntactically the structure of sentences in the poems is purposively constructed to be short to help create the aesthetics of sounds. The second conclusion is about the poetic features in the poems. Most sentences in the poems semantically deviate from literal meaning through the creation of metaphors. The last conclusion is about the combination between both structural and poetic features in revealing the messages or literary significance of the poems. The findings show that Hollander is interested in human lives and experiences. Then by conducting this study the researcher expects this study could bring some contributions to the study of Linguistics and Literature and to future research combining these two fields.
