Keywords instructional media popup pictures vocabulary. Instructional media are media which are used in the learning process in the classroom. This thesis deals with popup pictures as an instructional medium. The purpose of the use of popup pictures is to improve vocabulary mastery of the second year students of State Elementary School Gempol 3 . The problem in this study comes up when the researcher did her observation and asked the students in the 2nd grade of State Elementary School Gempol 3 about the name of an object or some vocabularies they could not answer without opening their textbook. They are addicted to always opening their textbooks to find the answer. Popup pictures are papers which contain folded cut-out pictures in a form of two dimensional scenes or figures when the papers are opened. These media are suitable for students of elementary schools in learning new English vocabulary. Vocabulary is a list of words that are taught by the teacher and learned by the students. This classroom action research (CAR) method consists of two cycles and the approach is qualitative approach. Cycle 1 and Cycle 2 were conducted in five meetings. There were three meetings in Cycle 1 and two meetings in Cycle 2. Each cycle consists of four stages those were planning implementation observing and reflection. Planning the action consists of prepared teaching strategy lesson plans research instruments instructional media and criteria of success. Next it was the implementation of the action which describes the way teacher teaches the students based on the lesson plans and instructional media (popup pictures and popup pictures clue cards). In observing the action the observer observed and collected the data based on the activities in the classroom. In reflecting the action the researcher analyzed the data and determined whether the actions succeed or not. The material or topic which was used in this research was about the means of transportations and the name of toys. The application of popup pictures clue cards in Cycle 2 was appropriate to use in learning English vocabulary and improving students vocabulary mastery because the forms and the colors of popup pictures were interesting and the clues which stated in the clue cards could make the students easier to learn the new vocabulary by memorizing the characteristics of an object. This finding could be seen from the scores of the students vocabulary test which improved in Cycle 2. The mean of scores in Cycle 1 was 77.34 and the mean of scores in Cycle 2 was 95.84. The results of the mean in vocabulary test Cycle 2 increased from the results of the mean in vocabulary test Cycle 1 from 77.34 to 95.84 and all the students scores were above the standard. The success of using popup pictures to improve vocabulary mastery of the second year students of State Elementary School Gempol 3 appeared when the researcher/teacher used popup pictures and clue cards in learning vocabulary in the Cycle 2. The procedures of using popup pictures clue cards are as follows (1) the researcher asked the students to take one of the clue cards (2) she read the clues or characteristics of an object in the clue card (3) she asked the name of an object which matched with the clues in clue card to the students (4) after the students knew the answer the researcher asked them to find the object by opening the pictures (5) she asked in what number the object was stated. The researcher did this procedure for the next pictures until the last pictures. Based on the results of the research the researcher has some suggestions (1) English teachers in primary schools are suggested to use these media to make the teaching and learning process more fun relieving the students boredom and attracting the students to be more active in learning English. Popup pictures which were used as an instructional medium especially in learning vocabulary were appropriate because these media have interesting forms and colors these media were cheap and the teacher can also create their own popup pictures using recycle material at home. (2) Future researchers are suggested to make the popup pictures more interesting than before if these popup pictures are going to be applied again in their research for students in elementary schools. Using an instructional medium in this case popup pictures were suitable and made learning process more varied. These media will be useful if the students were involved to create the popup pictures by themselves and the level of difficulty must be matched.
