The techniques of teaching reading comprehension implemented by the English teachers of grade VIII in SMP 10 Malang / Novriska Adini
Abstrak
Keywords techniques teaching reading reading comprehension The objectives of this study were to know the kinds of techniques applied in the teaching of reading comprehension in SMPN 10 Malang. Reading as one of the language skills is a written form of communication. The business of reading relates to the way the reader gets a message from a text. The students typically make use of their background knowledge vocabulary grammatical language and experience with the text to help them understanding a written text. So it cannot be denied that understanding the writer s message is very important for the students. Therefore mastering reading skill is important for the students so they can compete in this globalization era. In accordance with the nature of the objective of this study the appropriate design was descriptive qualitative research. The research was conducted at SMPN 10 Malang which is located at Jl. Mayjend Sungkono 57 Malang East Java. The subjects of the study were three teachers teacher A B and C who taught the students of eight grade class involved in the observation. The study was done from January 31 to February 5 2011. The researcher used interview questionnaire observation checklist and field notes in the study for data collection. The results of the study were described in detailed words in findings and discussions. The findings revealed that there were eight techniques applied by the teachers in the class in teaching of reading comprehension. They are pre-reading questions previewing teaching vocabulary inserted questions cloze procedure post reading-questions retelling and summarizing. The teachers divided the teaching of reading comprehension into three-phase technique. To conclude the teaching reading comprehension techniques applied by the teachers in SMPN 10 Malang were using three-phase technique. This technique was not an effective technique since the students were not able to follow the teaching learning activity. This happened because the students of the class have different ability. It is suggested to English teachers emphasizing on teaching vocabulary to ease the students in understanding a text and the teacher need to know more about other techniques in teaching reading comprehension so the teacher can use those other techniques and the students will not get bored.
