Using wordless picture books to improve the students\' ability in writing narrative texts / Dewi Hermawati

Abstrak
Key words wordless picture book narrative text The 11th grade students writing ability at SMAN 7 Malang was unsatisfactory. Most of the students had difficulty in generating and developing ideas. They had hard time even in starting their writings. As a result less than 50% of the students reached a minimum score (level good) for their writings. Wordless picture books were proposed as an alternative media to solve the problems in writing. Wordless picture book is a type of picture book in which the illustrations or the pictures tell the story with no or very little text. The pictures in the book are chronologically arranged. The aim of this study was to improve 11th grade students ability at SMA 7 Malang in writing narrative texts. In this study the researcher expected that 80% of the students scored level good for content organization and language use so that they could pass the minimum mastery criterion (Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimal/KKM) which was 75. The research design of this study was a collaborative action research which consisted of two cycles each of which consisted of three meetings. The preliminary study was done as verifying problem stage before conducting the first cycle. The second cycle needed to be done because the first cycle had not reached the criteria of success. The second cycle was done by doing an improvement on the activity. The cycles of this study consisted of four steps namely planning the action acting on the plan observing the action and reflecting on the observation. Each cycle consisted of three main stages pre-activity main activity and post-activity. The subject of the study was the 30 students of XI. IS 1 of SMAN 7 Malang in the academic year of 2010/2011. The instruments used to collect data were observation checklist field notes questionnaire scoring rubrics interview and the students writings. The data from the observation field notes and interview were analyzed and the results were reported descriptively. The data gained from questionnaire and scoring rubrics are presented in the form of tables and description. The result of the study showed that the wordless picture books effectively improved the students ability in writing narrative texts. All of the students had reached the minimum score of level good and passed the minimum mastery criterion (Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimal/KKM) which was 75. This improvement could be seen from the mean score of the class in preliminary was 65.53 while in Cycle 1 was 79.91 and 86.31 in Cycle 2. Moreover the majority of the students gave positive responses towards the implementation of wordless picture books in writing in the case that the result of questionnaire revealed 75.86% of the students showed excitement by saying wordless picture books needed to be used for the next writing activity. Furthermore they found that wordless picture books could enhance their ability and enjoyment of the writing process help them in generating and developing the ideas and increase their motivation in writing. They also learnt new vocabulary in writing using wordless picture books. In conclusion wordless picture books can be used to improve the students ability in writing narrative texts at SMAN 7 Malang. Wordless picture books were also very helpful to generate and develop the students ideas and creativity. The students found that writing was an enjoyable activity since the pictures stimulated them to produce written products. It is suggested that the teacher use the wordless picture books in teaching writing since it can solve students problems in writing. It is also suggested that other researchers conduct other researches which apply wordless picture books in other skills and genres.
