Self-study reading materials for students of grade VIII / Jevi Wenda Santi
Abstrak
Key Words self-study reading material grade VIII Providing suitable self-instructional reading materials has a purpose of enhance the students reading comprehension. It also aims at training students to be more responsible toward their own learning. Unfortunately the appropriate self-instruction materials is rare and expensive besides ready-to-use selfinstruction reading materials that are available in market are rarely appropriate with the curriculum and for self-instruction use. The purpose of this study is to develop appropriate self-study reading materials for students of grade VIII. This study applies seven developmental steps (1) conducting needs analysis (2) listing theories of language learning (3) selecting potentials text (4) materials development (5) materials evaluation experts validation and material try-out (6) revision and (7) final product (Tomlinson and Masuhara 1998). Firstly the questionnaires were distributed to students. The potentia l texts were selected based on the data from needs analysis. Finally 50 texts were chosen to be developed they were adapted through several ways e.g. etion addition expansion and so on. Beside the adaptation of the materials the exercises also were developed. The result of the material development was reading materials which consisted of three part descriptive recount and narrative. They were completed with five comprehension questions and word focus which consisted of some difficult words. Each of the text was also accompanied by the answer key so that the students could do self-assessment. When the materials were ready it was given to the experts to be validated. The materials were also tried out to the students. Based on the expert judgment and materials try-out some revisions were made. One text from narrative part was moved to recount part and it was replaced with the new text. Five texts in descriptive part were discarded and replaced with five new texts. Three texts in recount part were edited to improve the level of difficulty and one text was casted off. The revision was conducted to improve the quality of the material. Based on the materials try-out it is found that the students like the materials. They could understand the texts and answered most of the questions. They thought the material are attractive and the content also interesting it broadened their knowledge
