Aremanita is (not) Aremania: gender representation of women football supporters / Uliya Nafida
Abstrak
Keywords gender representation language function frame strategy agenda settings. Football has become a pop culture. Masculinity of football has shifted along with the existences of women football supporters community. One of women football supporters community is Aremanita. This thesis mainly discusses the existence of Aremanita and the role of Malang Post newspaper in representing them to public. Moreover it questions the gendered expectation imposed on Aremanita as represented on Malang Post. The main data was taken from Malang Post September 1 2009- May 30 2010. Ibnu Hamad s theory of creating reality in mass media studies is chosen to conduct the research. Mass media should conduct three steps in order to create certain image toward the issue being uplifted they are language function framing strategy and agenda setting. Mass media have big power to construct identity of certain community. This thesis analyzes how Malang Post directs its readers to maintain the identity of women football supporters based on the construction that it has implied through the text and images. The result of the research shows that Malang Post identified women supporters as the new community of football supporters which bring their own characteristics that distinguish them to men supporters. Moreover Malang Post also identified women football supporters as a community which identical with physical beauty and sexiness. On the other hand women football supporters are only placed as the object in football they have not been placed as the subject who bring positive contribution for the development of football.
