Thesis Graduate Program in English Language Education State University of Malang. Advisors (1) Dr. Hj. Arwijati W. Murdibjono M.Pd DipTESL (2) A. Effendi Kadarisman M.A Ph.D. Key words Picture-based story-telling technique speaking ability. Based on the researcher s experience in teaching English and the preliminary study conducted the students achievement in speaking skill was unsatisfactory. The students average score in speaking was 55.42 while the minimum mastery criterion (KKM/Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimum) was 65. It was so because (1) the students had difficulty when they wanted to speak English (2) the student had less time for practicing using English (3) the students had low motivation in speaking English. To overcome these problems the researcher proposed one of the suitable technique in speaking English that was using picture-based story-telling technique. This study was designed to improve the students speaking skill by using picture-based story-telling technique. The objective of this study was to describe how picture-based story-telling technique can improve the students speaking skill of the eleventh graders of MAN Kisaran. The study was collaborative action research in which the researcher and the collaborative teacher worked together in conducting this study. The researcher acted as the teacher while the English teacher became the researcher s collaborator to observe the implementation of using picture-based story-telling technique. This study was conducted in cycles by following the procedures of the action research i.e. planning implementing observing and reflecting. Each cycle consisted of three meetings. The data of the study were gathered through the following instruments observation checklist field notes questionnaire and students performance in telling the story. The subjects of this study were 36 eleventh graders of MAN Kisaran of 2010/2011 academic. Implementing using picture-based story-telling technique in teaching speaking encompasses several procedures (1) dividing the students into groups of four (2) giving explanation about the narrative form in order that the students knew the construction of narrative form (3) explaining the past tense form (4) giving modeling to tell the story using pictures in front of the class (5) distributing the pictures to the students so that the students would see the story that they would tell in front of the class (6) giving vocabulary to the students related to the story (7) giving description about the story of each picture (8) asking the students to discuss the story in their group (9) asking students to tell the story using pictures individually in front of the class (10) asking the students to explain the construction of the narrative (11) asking the students to give some comments about the story told by their friend (12) correcting the students pronunciation. The finding of the study indicated that using picture-based story-telling technique was successful in improving speaking achievement. The improvement could be seen from the increase of students average speaking skill from 55.42 in the preliminary study and 59.46 in the Cycle 1 to 75.92 in Cycle 2. Besides the finding also indicated that using picture-based story-telling technique was effective in enhancing the students participation and motivation. It showed that there were 44% students participated actively in Cycle 1 and 93% students participated in Cycle 2. In addition it was found that there were 80% students were motivated in implementing the story-telling technique. It can be concluded that using picture-based story-telling technique is effective to improve the students achievement and the students participation and students motivation. The English teachers are suggested that they implement the technique in their English class particularly in speaking class. In addition the teachers in other subjects such as Indonesian Arabic are suggested to apply picture-based story-telling technique in their classroom activities. The future researchers are recommended that they conduct research by implementing picture-based story-telling technique. Finally the school principal is expected to facilitate the English teachers in improving their teaching quality in the classroom.
