Teaching writing text using venn-diagram strategy to the ninth grade students of MTs Fathur Rahman Batu Sopang, Paser Regency, East Kalimantan / Abd. Gafur Yusuf

The result of preliminary study showed that the ninth grade students of MTs Fathur Rahman Batu Sopang Academic Year 2010/2011 had two problems relating to writing report text. The problems were the students had low motivation and the students had unsatisfactory score in writing report text. The study is designed to cope the problems by promoting how Venn-diagram Strategy is developed to improve the skill in writing report text of the ninth grade students. Employing a classroom action research design the researcher was assisted by an English teacher as the collaborator to observe the teaching and learning process. Conducted in two cycles the study took 21 subjects of the ninth grade students for cycle 1 and 8 subjects of the ninth grade students for cycle 2. To collect data on the students writing score the study used writing test at the end of each cycle while questionnaire was used to collect data about the students motivation. To observe the Venn-diagram applied in the teaching of writing report text the study used observation check list and field notes. The criteria of success were set up on the basis of the students highly motivation and the students writing score achieving passing grade level (60). With the implementation of Venn-diagram Strategy the students had high motivation in writing report text either in cycle 1 or cycle 2. While for the writing score achievement 13 (62%) students out of 21 students passed the passing grade level in cycle 1 and all students achieved the passing grade level in cycle 2. The findings showed that the model of Venn-diagram strategy consisted of five steps the prewriting the drafting the revising the editing (conferencing) and the publishing. The Venn-diagram strategy has been proven to be able to enhance the students to have high motivation and increase the students writing score on report text. English teachers are recommended to apply the strategy to teach the students to start writing simple report text. Furthermore other researchers are suggested to conduct another classroom action research to produce more complex report text because the Venn-diagram strategy can only assist the student to write simple report text consisting of one general paragraph and two description paragraphs.
