The teaching of English at SMP Negeri 10 Malang / Basori
Abstrak
Keywords teaching English teaching technique This study was intended to investigate and describe the kinds of teaching techniques used by the English teachers in teaching English and the English teachers perceptions on the use of teaching techniques in teaching English at SMP Negeri 10 Malang. The design of the study was descriptive qualitative research. The research was conducted in SMP Negeri 10 Malang which is located at Jl. Mayjend Sungkono No. 57 Malang East Java. The researcher meant to involve all the English teachers from all grades as the subject of the study but because of some practical reason only three teachers participated as the subjects of the study. The study was conducted on 28th of February 2nd of April 2011. The researcher used interview and observation for data collection and also used some supplementary documents as supporting data so that the researcher could get the valid data. Having analyzed the data the researcher found that teachers in SMP Negeri 10 Malang used three-phased technique in teaching English. This technique is actually more about the division stages in the process of teaching learning namely pre-activity main or whilst activity and ended by post activity. In every stage the teachers did some activities which vary from teaching one skill to others particularly in the main activities. The goal of the technique used in SMP Negeri 10 Malang was aimed overall to motivate the students to study English. Furthermore the activities were modified so that they could handle the lack of facilities in order to run the teaching and learning process well. Together with that reasons every single activity used implies many reasons why they were used in teaching English. It is suggested that (1). Teachers learn more about various techniques in teaching English (2). Teachers use more kinds of media in the process of teaching learning as a part of consideration as it improves the quality of teaching and learning (3). The variations of activities particularly in each phase be used to avoid students boredom.
