The perceptions of Indonesian speakers of English toward speaker\'s age as reflected in the choice of words / Krisnawati Lisandi

Abstrak
Keywords group of age speaker s age choice of words associated words. It has been a common fact that somebody categorizes himself into a particular group through one of many media that is language. Somebody or a group of people use language as a media in terms of the use of definite terms or particular vocabularies within the group in order to show their identities. Age is a group where people can decide which group they belong to young or old group. Age is also seen as an influencing factor that has a significance toward the language use that is in people s choice of words. Thus it is assumed there are some words that are associated as the vocabularies of certain group. In this study group of age is divided into two groups those are Old Group and Young Group. Both groups are believed to have difference in the use or choice of words in their daily conversation. Through a quantitative method this study used questionnaire as the instrument and took 80 respondents from two groups of age as the subject of the study. The researcher could see the tendency of both group in selecting the word through the provied vocabularies that were believed to show the differences of age-graded words. In addition the words had been set in the form of casual/ informal conversation. The results of the study are used to find out the answers of general research problem that is about the perception of speakers age of English words especially seen on the associated words of Old or Young group. This perception is viewed from Indonesian speakers as EFL learners. From this study the researcher obtained the list of the most frequently occuring words among the speakers of each group of age. In casual converstion there are 15 words that occur the most within old speakers conversation while there are 18 words appear as the most used words among young speakers. Besides explaining about the words that are associated as the most frequently used words by each group the results of the study also show the words that are used by both group and words that is called data balance in term of its balanced usage by the speakers in a group of age. From the analysis it can be obtained a conclusion that young speakers shows such a pattern in choosing the word rather than old speakers. It has answered of how Indonesian speakers perspective about the associated words related with the speaker who use it. The research can conclude that within Indonesian speakers as the EFL learner it is not significantly found a sense of speakers choice of words related to the difference of speakers age.
