Using Mr. Bean videos to improve the ability of the eight graders of MTsN Terate Pandian Sumenep in writing a recount paragraph / Asri Atikah Wahyudiyati

Abstrak

M.A. Ph.D. (2) Dr. Gunadi Harry Sulistyo M.A. Key words writing media video recount action research This study was conducted to improve the ability of eighth graders of MTsN Terate Pandian Sumenep in writing a recount paragraph. Mr. Bean videos was proposed to be applied in the teaching of writing not only because it is interesting and attracting but also because it is a good medium to introduce and present the content organization and the grammatical feature of recount text since recount texts consist of series of events or experiences in the past usually in the order they occured. In addtion some previous studies found that video/film is able to stimulate the students to be more actively involved in the writing activity so their writing ability can be enhanced. This study used action research design. The researcher and her collaborative teacher worked together in designing the lesson plan setting the criteria of success implementing the action observing the action and making reflection. The subjects of this study were VIII-C students of MTs Negeri Terate Sumenep of the 2010/2011 academic year. This study was conducted by following the procedures of the action research i.e. planning implementing observing and reflecting. The main activity of the teaching and learning process was Building Knowledge of the Field (BkoF) Modelling of the Text (MoT) Joint Construction of the Text (JcoT) and Independent Construction of the Text (IcoT). In BKoF and MoT the students were given a recount text then the students analyzed the generic structure language features and the connectors used in the text. After that the researcher gave a modelling on how to write a recount paragraph based on Mr. Bean video. In JCoT the students wrote a recount paragraph in group following the procedure in modelling. In ICoT the students wrote a recount text independently. The result of the study showed that the use of Mr. Bean videos through writing process can improve the students s ability in writing a recount paragraph. The percentage of the students achieving the score above KKM had improved from only 14.89% (7 students out of 47 students) in the preliminary study to 77.50% (31 students out of 40 students) in Cycle 1 and to 80% (36 students out of 45 students). Besides the mean scores of each aspect content organization language use and vocabulary also improved. Based on the findings of the study it is suggested for English teachers to implement Mr. Bean video in teaching writing especially recount text. In implementing the videos the teachers should vary in the way how they teach students so that the students will not get bored. It is also suggested that the teachers be selective in choosing the appropriate videos for students to avoid negative effect of video. For further researcher it is suggested to use Mr. Bean video for different text types and on different grades and levels of education. In addition related to the weaknesses identified in this study further researchers are suggested to conducts preliminary study more than one time to get the students real condition in order to identify the students problem more accurately. Next the scoring rubric should reflect the text type. Finally the students who failed achieving the KKM should be given reinforcement and remedial until they can achieve the KKM.
