Memoirs of Vidocq: Master of Crime: is Vidocq a hidden criminal of a hidden policeman? / Nurmianti

Abstrak
Keywords Anti-hero archetype individuation As an anti-hero character Eugene Francois Vidocq went through a radical development within himself. The radical development made him possess two contrasting identities. He began his career as a notorious scoundrel but then he ended up becoming a famous policeman. The former identity of Vidocq as a criminal made him remain a hidden criminal amongst his policemen fellows regardless of his services to the La Surete Police Department. On the contrary he also had to keep his identity to hold his power being a policeman when he was in the service. Hence there is also a possibility that he was also a hidden policeman. In this thesis the writer analyzed the development of Vidocq character by using the psychoanalysis of Carl Jung to know whether Vidocq was a hidden criminal or a hidden policeman. The psychoanalysis dug out the deepest human psychic that revealed the most hidden identity of human being. It was also paralleled with fabula study as one of the theories of narratology. The theory of fabula allowed the readers to make sense the psychoanalysis theory within Vidocq character in the narrative text. The study also used a descriptive qualitative method to describe the development of Vidocq character. The result of the study revealed that Vidocq went through a human psychic process that led him to reach the deepest identity of his maturity. As a criminal who needed to survive he used his potential to catch his own friends who were also criminals in order for his freedom. Thus the situation that he dealt with and the ways he held his superior power to catch thieves made him become a hidden policeman.
