The quality of student book \"Bahasa Inggris for Junior High School Year VIII\" / Myta Laili Maghfiroh
Abstrak
Key words English textbook EFL book criteria This study is conducted in order to analyze how much the English textbook entitled Bahasa Inggris for Junior High School Year VIII that is used as one of English textbooks in international standard school meets the requirements of good EFL book criteria. Specifically this study aims at analyzing the English textbook in terms of (1) language content and skills (2) communicative aspects (3) authenticity of the dialogs and reading texts (4) practice materials (5) sequence and gradation and (6) technicalities. This is a descriptive evaluative study which focuses on content analysis that attempts to analyze the English textbook used for eighth graders especially in international standard school. The source of the data is the English textbook - Bahasa Inggris for Junior High School Year VIII. The instruments used are checklists and analysis forms. This study found that the textbook is categorized as good with percentage 84 30% in terms of language content and skills. Secondly in terms of communicative aspect the textbook is categorized as very good with percentage 94 21%. Next in terms of authenticity of the dialogs and reading skills the textbook is categorized as very poor with percentage 36 13%. Fourthly the textbook is categorized as good with percentage 66 29% in terms of practice materials. Fifthly the textbook is categorized as good with percentage 74 56% in terms of sequence and gradation. Lastly in terms of technicalities the textbook is categorized as good with percentage 65 96%. It can be concluded that the English textbook entitled Bahasa Inggris for Junior High School Year VIII in general has met the criteria of a good EFL textbook well since the average percentage that describe the fulfillment of the textbook towards the criteria of good EFL textbook is 70 25%. It means that the textbook is relatively suitable to be used as learning materials for the teacher and students. Based on the findings the researcher suggests that the writer of the textbook should improve the quality of the textbook by considering several aspects in the textbook. The textbook publishers should also be more selective in choosing the textbooks that will be published and do some editing and evaluating before publishing them so that the quality of the textbook can be maintained. The English teachers need to consider finding other alternative learning materials and resources to teach the students and not rely on one textbook only. For other researchers who may conduct the similar studies about textbook evaluation it is suggested that the next researchers should make more careful consideration in selecting the criteria of the textbook that will be evaluated.
