Abstrak
Key Words Material Development Speaking skill Yalden s concept of development Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL). The increase in the number of nursing schools means to increase the number of graduates every year which causes a serious problem in the job market. The Government has taken steps to solve this problem. These steps are still focused on efforts for equitable distribution of nurses throughout Indonesia. The government cannot place all of them in an appropriate position as civil servants because there is no budget for them. Alternatively to send those surplus nurses abroad is considered the best solution decided by the government for improving the country foreign reserves and reducing unemployment in Indonesia There are opportunities for Indonesia to send nurses abroad due to the high demand of nurses in neighboring countries. Several countries have been offering opportunities for nurses medical doctors and other human resources on health to work there. They have asked for nurses to work there with various kinds of criteria including English communication skill. Based on the result of needs analysis which was done in Indonesia and Wellington New Zealand for four months to increase the passing rate of the applicants one of the requirements to get a job abroad and in international hospitals for graduates of nursing schools is the ability to communicate in English. However the speaking class is taught by teachers with many weaknesses limited materials and activities. Moreover the syllabus is not created based on the students need but based on the teachers preference. This results show the discrepancy between the demand of the students and the teaching learning process. So developing speaking instructional materials should be done to meet the students need. The model used in this study is based on Yalden s model (1987) namely Language Program Development (LPD). The research consists of Needs Analysis Development Validation and Revision Try- out and Revision to produce Final Product. The development was done after all the information was gathered from the needs analysis. Then the draft of the syllabus and the materials were designed. The developed materials were validated by the experts to get feed backs opinions and suggestions. After the products were revised they were tried out in class to know the acceptability and usability of the developed materials for nursing students. Findings for the try-out were used to revise the products. All the findings in the field were discussed with the experts to revise the product again. The product of the study is a speaking textbook for nursing projected to work at the hospital. This therefore the materials deal with English for occupation or professional purposes as the branch of English for Specific Purposes (ESP). This will constitute the basic stand and corridor for all activities to be performed in the study. The final products have the characteristics as follows the topics are arranged based on the real duties of nurses in hospital wards where English is spoken the vocabulary exercises are made based on the nurses need in understanding the nursing context and speaking activities are designed based on the nurses need to communicate in nursing settings and the language functions are explained to support the nursing students to use their own sentences which are used in their speaking practice. The speaking activities as the application of CTL are designed based on the real context of nursing settings in daily working hours in hospital. These characteristics are reflected in the materials since the materials are presented in a particular context and it has the elements of seven pillar of CTL such as constructivism inquiry questioning and learning community modeling reflection and authentic assessment. Therefore the final product is considered acceptable and usable for nursing students.
