Vocfun: developing an interactive vocabulary CD as self-study materials at SDN Percobaan 1 Malang / Yudi Indra Setyawan
Abstrak
Key words interactive CD multimedia vocabulary EYL (English for Young Learners) self-study materials. In learning a foreign language vocabulary plays an important role. It is an element that integrates into each of the four skills of language that is listening speaking reading and writing. In Teaching English for Young Learner media is considered necessary to support learning. In the past teaching learning activity may use only one kind of media visual or audio such as using pictures or songs. Nowadays by using a computer teacher can combine more than one media to be applied in class. A number of teachers have already started to use multimedia in the classroom. The objective of this study is to develop teaching media in the form of an interactive CD ROM to enhance the students 8223 vocabulary mastery relevant to the syllabus of English for fifth grade students of Elementary School. The design used in this study was Research and Development design. The procedure of the CD development started with need analysis which aimed to know the students 8223 background and students 8223 characteristics in learning English. In this phase the data collection used were analyzing document distributing questionnaires and doing observations and interviews. The next phase was development in this phase the researcher designed the product and gathered all multimedia elements to be compiled into a trial version of the product. Then the process continued into validation phase which consists of three stages that were expert validation developmental test and field test. Revision was needed during the validation phase in order to get the best result of the product. After being revised in the validation phase the final product was produced. The final product in this study is an Interactive CD that contains teaching media of vocabulary learning. The CD covers seven topics taken from the English materials for V grade students of Elementary School. Each topic consisted of three subtopics. In the first subtopic that is vocabulary section the users will be shown some pictures related to the topics. The students can find an example sentence of the picture the phonetic symbols and the audio on how to pronounce the words. The second subtopic contains three kinds of activities that is matching anagram and arranging. The activities are completed with visualization. The last part is two songs related to the topic. There were forty students involved in the field test and the result from the questionnaire showed that the majority of the students (80%) confirmed that they totally like 8223 the graphic interface of the CD. In addition 67.5% of the students found it totally easy 8223 to operate the interactive CD. 77.5% of the students stated that they totally like 8223 the materials inserted in the CD. Finally the result stated that 70% percent of the students confirmed that the CD totally help 8223 them to learn English especially on vocabulary. Based on the findings the final product of this study was found to be an interesting and attractive multimedia for vocabulary learning. The students liked to learn vocabulary using the interactive CD and they did the activities enthusiastically. Related to the findings some suggestions are given as follows English teachers are suggested to use media in the classroom and/or for self-study to support learning especially in Teaching English to Young Learners (TEYL). For the future researchers who would like to conduct research on similar topics are suggested to develop a CD which is targeted to students of different grades covering different topics with more varied activities.
