Developing listening materials for the tenth graders of MAN Denanyar Jombang / Dian Fajarini Asmoro

Adnan Latief M.A. Ph.D Key words developing listening materials standard of content Listening a receptive skill has been neglected by many teachers and so has the teacher of MAN Denanyar Jombang. The main reason of it is because of the unavailability of the appropriate listening materials especially for the beginning of the education year yet it is very important to train the students listening skill from the beginning they learn a foreign language. Therefore providing the appropriate listening materials for the tenth graders of MAN Denanyar Jombang becomes the objective of this research. The term appropriate here means to match the 2006 Standard of Content to match the students needs and also condition. This research is an adapted Research and Development (R D) model by Borg and Gall (1983) which has some procedures such as needs survey developing the materials experts and teacher s validation revision limited try out second revision and the final product. Meanwhile for developing the materials the researcher mainly uses the theory from Hyland (2003) that consists of the consideration of students consideration of the target context establishment of course goals and objectives devising units of work and lesson creation or evaluation and selection of materials and teaching the course. Based on the three instruments used in needs survey namely questionnaire interview and observation it is found out that eighty-five (85%) of the students agree that listening materials are necessary with the type of exercises such as multiple choice (75%) picture matching (60%) complete the dialogue (30%) short answer (15%) and true-false (5%). From the result of the experts validation of the general evaluation of the developed listening materials both of them gave very good and good judgement for the product and only gave revisions on the punctuation and format of the typing. The result of the try out also showed that the final product of listening materials for the tenth graders of MAN Denanyar Jombang did not need any revisions except for the providing of pauses of the recorded CD. The final product was in the form of CD a teacher s guidebook and students workbook. CD contained videos and all recorded voice about the topic given in each unit. The teacher s guidebook consisted of learning objective the direction of how to use the product or teach the materials the stages in the steps suggested in teaching listening answers key and the tapescript. Meanwhile the students workbook contained the learning objective model of pronunciation listening tasks/exercises that should be done by the students and the expansion activity. The researcher made conclusion that this product is suitable for the tenth graders of MAN Denanyar Jombang in terms of content the language difficulty materials attractiveness effectiveness and practicality with the video as its strength. The researcher also recommended some things for teachers such as reading the teachers guidebook before using the product and making improvisation in delivering the materials. For other researchers who wish to conduct the similar research the researcher suggested to have a further research on the effectiveness of the product after being applied in the classroom and to have other R D s research in developing listening materials for the eleventh and twelfth graders.
