Abstrak
Unpublished Thesis. English Language Teaching Department. Graduate Program of the State University of Malang. Advisors (1) A. Effendi Kadarisman M.A. Ph.D. (2) Dr. Yazid Basthomi M.A. Keywords prepositions collocational pattern concordance corpus This study is corpus-based which was aimed to investigate the frequency of prepositions in reading texts of upper secondary English textbooks. It also investigated the collocational patterns of prepositions in the textbooks. However the investigation of the collocational patterns were only restricted to prepositions of time place and direction. The data of this study were prepositions taken from three English textbooks namely Interlanguage X Interlanguage XI and Interlanguage XII. Those books are electronic books published by Ministry of National Education. The instrument used in this study was AntConc 3.2.1w. The Wordlist and concordance KWIC of AntConc 3.2.1w were utilized to analyze the data. The findings of this study revealed regarding the frequency that there were some prepositions that occurred in high frequency such as to in for on by at up from into over and after. However it was also found that there were some prepositions that occurred in low frequency or even no frequency. Concerning collocational pattern it was found that prepositions of place were found frequently appear in N prep NP and V prep NP patterns prepositions of time mostly appear in N prep NP and prep NP and prepositions of direction frequently appear in V prep NP pattern. Based on the findings and discussion there are three suggestions presented here. First for writers or book publishers it is recommended that they provide list of vocabulary consisting of collocations of prepositions especially if the reading texts deal with descriptive text recount text procedure spoof report and narrative text. Secondly for English teachers since there are some prepositions which have low frequency of occurrence in the textbooks the teachers can take the examples of prepositions online corpora such as Time magazine corpus and COCA. For future researchers it is widely opened to do research using concordance for example investigating teachers use of prepositions in their daily teaching talk so that they can compare with the results of this study to find out which input influences the students most. In addition since the data of this study were limited only to reading texts future researchers can investigate all the texts including conversational texts in the textbooks.
