Abstrak
Keywords Numbered Heads Together reading Classroom Action Research Many junior-high-students find reading hard to master. Based on a preliminary study in MTs Al-Amin Mojokerto it was identified that eighth graders found it hard to comprehend texts especially narrative texts. As the result they had difficulty in answering questions following reading texts. To solve this problem the researcher proposed Numbered Heads Together (NHT) to be implemented in reading class because many researchers have proven that this technique can effectively help the students comprehend the materials and actively participate in class activities. This study is aimed at helping the eighth graders of MTs Al-amin Mojokerto to improve their reading ability by using Numbered Heads Together in learning reading. This study was classroom action research (CAR). The instruments used to collect the data were reading test (pre-test and post-test) interview guide field notes observation checklist and questionnaires. The criteria of success of this CAR was that if more than 80% of the students achieve score equal to or above 70 (Minimum degree of achievement) and more than 80% gave positive responses toward the implementation of NHT. The basic procedure of Numbered Heads Together is as follows. First students number off within the team. Second the teacher asks them some questions. Third students put their heads together or discussed the questions to make sure that everyone on the team knows the answer. Finally the teacher calls a number at random and students with that number raise their hands to be called upon to answer the question and earn points for their teams. This study was conducted to the eighth graders of MTs Al-Amin in academic year 2010-2011. The subjects were one class of the grade eight VIII-B. The class consisted of 25 students. All of them are boys. The finding shows that the students achieved better score after the implementation of NHT technique in reading class. In preliminary study (pre-test) ten (40%) out of 25 students got score below 70 the minimum degree of achievement (Standar Ketercapaian Minimum/SKM). In post test only one student (4%) out of 25 students achieved score below 70. Besides in preliminary study only three out of 25 students were active or gave positive responses toward the teaching reading activities while in Cycle 1 20 students were active and 24 (96%) students gave positive response toward the implementation of NHT in reading class. They were interested motivated confident and cooperative with their classmates. In conclusion the finding of the research shows that the NHT can help the students improve their reading ability and their attitude. Thus the writer suggests that NHT be used in teaching and learning reading in junior high schools.
