The code switching practice in the teaching English of bilingual class B at TK Laboratorium of The State University of Malang / Wahyuning Eka Aprilia
Abstrak
Key words code switching the teaching of English Kindergarten tudents This research aims to investigate code switching practice used by the teachers in teaching English of Bilingual class B at TK Laboratorium of the State University of Malang. TK Laboratorium of the State University of Malang is one of favorite kindergarten which is located in jalan Magelang no.2 Malang. This study is mainly intended to identify the types of code switching used by the two teachers which are teaching in Bilingual class B. Then the reasons of code switching are presented after the discussions of the types of code switching. The design of this study is descriptive qualitative and the subjects are two English teachers. The data of the study are the form of written recorded utterances when the teachers are teaching in the classroom. The class was started from 07.00 a.m. until 10.00 a.m. In a week the data was taken in 3 days active of teaching learning process and it occurs twice so all the data were taken six times from March to April. The result shows that there are five types of code switching found in teaching English of Bilingual class B at TK Laboratorium of the State University of Malang practically used by the two teachers. They are inter-sentential code switching (41.5%) intra-sentential code switching (41.5%) emblematic code switching (11.9%) establishing continuity with the previous speaker (3.4%) and changing of pronunciation features (1.7%). Besides there are eleven probable reasons for the use of code switching by the two English teachers namely repetition used for clarification (35.9%) memorisable (13.1%) the notion that a speaker may not be able to express in one language (13.1%) intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor (12.4%) appreciation (5.5%) talking about a particular topic (5.5%) being emphatic about something (4.1%) expressing one s solidarity with a particular social group (4.1%) expressing people s thought (3.5%) interjection or inserting sentence fillers or sentence connector (1.4%) and expressing group identity (1.4%). This study suggests sociolinguistics students to think critically in analyzing other interesting phenomena in spoken discourses in other contexts not only in informal situation but also in formal one. Then it is also suggested for the future researcher to get various theories and various condition in order to make the result of the data more reliable so that they can explore various types and reasons for the use of code switching that occur in some other situations more than what has been done by the researcher. Besides they are also expected to give more information about code switching.
