English as a medium onf instruction in teaching and learning activities of fourth grade at International Class Program of International Laboratory Primary School of State University of Malang / Felphino Nira Wodangange
Abstrak
Key words English as a medium of instruction International Laboratory Primary school of State University of Malang. This study is conducted to describe the use of English as a medium of instruction in teaching and learning activities at International Laboratory Primary school of State University of Malang. It aims at (1) describing the proportion of English use as a medium of instruction in teaching and learning activities (2) describing teacher s problems and (3) describing how teachers solve the problems in using English as a medium of instruction in teaching and learning activities. The design of this study is descriptive qualitative and the subjects are teachers of fourth grade. The instruments used to obtain the data are observation field notes documentation and interview. The study is conducted from March until April 2011. The findings of this study indicate that the frequency of English use as a medium of instruction in the fourth grade at international class program is about 87% of the total number of the utterances spoken by the teachers in classroom. Beside that this study also shows teachers problems in using English as a medium of instruction in teaching and learning activities. They are (1) problem with the module (2) problem with the technical terms (3) problem with vocabulary and (4) problem in pronunciation and grammar. The possible ways to solve the problems by the teachers are (1) trying to make the module written in English (2) preparing the materials well (3) using more simple words gestures or illustrations to make the students get the meanings clearly and (4) trying to learn English by reading a lot and sharing with the other teachers to increase their Englis Based on these findings teachers should provide more exposures and comprehensible input for the students by using English in almost all of situations in the classroom and modifying their speech into simpler one. Teachers should also consistently use English on their talk to motivate the students to use English too.
