Key Words Text Messages EFL learners. There have been some advancements of Information Communication and Technology (ICT) devices nowadays. The improvement of the technology has changed and influenced the way people communicate to each other. One of the ICT tools is cell phone. Cell phones have been one of the ICT tools that permeate to all the society levels including teenagers. Many people including linguists teachers and parents are giving a high intention about the existence of the language of text messages as one of the features of cell phone. For that reason this thesis takes the study on text messages. The objective of this thesis as stated follows (1) What types of orthographic representation occur in EFL learners text messages (2) How much error occurs in their text messages (3) What types of error occur in their text messages. This thesis took a study of EFL learners who were studying at English Department second semester of University of Malang Indonesia. The selection of those populations was based on the reasons that they were still supposed to be teenagers in that semester. The data were taken around February to March 2011. There were 1.208 words of 100 traffics from the second semester of English Department. This study uses descriptive qualitative research. After collecting the data the researcher then classified the data according to the classification of non-standard orthographic system number of errors and types of errors. For the rich peculiarities and strange forms of abbreviations of the corpus no software has been used but the data have been categorized manually in a data base built for this purpose. Among the six categories of non-standard orthographic system all data showed that EFL learners employed all the categories. While in terms of the number of errors the number of abbreviation has reached 20%. In terms of mechanical problems there were 127 cases of misuse of mechanics. Among them double or multiple full stops dominate the findings. In terms of error types there is much evident that the EFL learners of being studied were not well enough in certain rules of English grammars. Some errors were in present tense past tense perfect tense conditional form. Some others were about the use of mechanics and the use of articles.
