The teaching of reading at palm kids Malang: a National plus pre-school and kindergarten / Ratna Indriana
Abstrak
Key Words Palm Kids Teaching Reading. The recent issue of the primary school entrance selection test is that each student will have to have competencies in reading writing and counting if they want to succeed in entering the favorite primary school create a significant change toward the pre-school and kindergarten curriculum in Malang. The changing of the pre-school and kindergarten curriculum in Malang was the main subject to be taught they are reading writing and counting competencies. Palm Kids pre-school and kindergarten located in Jalan Buring no. 6 Malang is one of few pre-schools and kindergartens in Malang which taught their students to read in two languages they are English and Bahasa Indonesia. Thus the researcher decided to conduct a study to describe the teaching material the teaching techniques and the teaching media used by the teachers in Palm Kids in teaching of reading to their students. The design of this study was qualitative descriptive. The subjects of the study were the principal the teachers and the students of Palm Kids. The researcher used the techniques of observation and interview in collecting the data. The instruments used in collecting the data were the researcher herself the observation field notes and the interview guide list. The data analysis were conducted by sorting the data collected coding the data and the final step was analyzing the data. Based on the data analyzing the researcher gather four findings. The first is reading English words program in Palm Kids was given to the students since their first year (toddler class) and it was given with the arrangement from the simplest (the phonetic sound of each alphabet) to the complex ones (reading and comprehend a simple text). The second findings is the materials used in the teaching learning process in the classroom were limited the teachers only used worksheet workbook vocabulary in the flashcards teachers handbook and story books to find simple texts. The third the teaching technique used by the teachers to teach reading to their students was in the form of phonetic sound system. The phonetic sound system were supported with other teaching techniques which different for each grade but all of the grades used listening and repeating listening and doing listening and identifying questions and answers. For toddler and nursery the teacher includes coloring pictures and rhyming. Games are rarely used by the teachers as one of the teaching techniques to deliver the concept. And the last finding was the media used in the teaching learning process were limited the teacher always used flashcards and realia (real objects) to present the materials. The conclusion of the study was the teaching material the teaching techniques and the teaching media used by the teachers in Palm Kids were very limited which make their students feel little bit bored sometimes and their development in reading skill was not maximally facilitate. The researcher suggested that the teachers in Palm Kids should enrich their knowledge about teaching reading to their young learners also gain more information to develop the teaching techniques the teaching material and the teaching media used in delivering the concept of teaching reading. Gathering more information could be done by reading more references dealing with teaching reading to young learners or browsing through the internet.
