Using back and draw activities in the lesson study format to improve the ability in writing of the students of MTsN Tambakberas Jombang / Ni\'matuz Zahroh
Abstrak

This study is aimed at improving the ability of the eighth graders of MTsN Tambakberas Jombang in writing by using Back and Draw activities. This strategy is chosen based on its strength in encouraging students to be more actively involved in the teaching and learning process with the intention that their ability in writing increases. Consequently the research problem formulated in this research is How can the use of Back and Draw activities improve the ability in writing for the eighth graders of MTsN Tambakberas Jombang To achieve the purpose collaborative classroom action research was employed following four stages planning implementing observing and reflecting. This study was implemented in three cycles. Each cycle consisted of two meetings. In the first cycle the first meeting focused on socializing the strategy and understanding a recount text the second meeting focused on the implementation of Back and Draw activities. While in the second and third cycles the prewriting and the drafting stages implemented in the first meeting and the second meeting focused on the revising and the editing stages. This study uses the Back and Draw strategy in the Lesson Study format. The principle of Lesson Study is expected to be done systematically and can improve the quality of education especially the quality of the teaching and learning process in the classroom. Lesson Study was conducted in three steps namely Plan (planning) Do (executing) and See (reflection). The subjects of the research were 33 students of grade VIII-A of MTsN Tambakberas Jombang in the 2010/2011 academic year. The instruments employed for collecting the data are observation checklist field notes a scoring guide and interview guides for the students. The results of the study revealed that Back and Draw activities improved the writing ability of the eighth graders of MTsN Tambakberas Jombang in writing recount paragraphs. The improvement was indicated by the increase of students average writing scores from 42.6 in preliminary test 57.2 in the first cycle 64.6 in the second cycle to 70.2 in the third cycle. Besides the results of the study showed that the students were enthusiastic motivated and actively involved in teaching and learning process using Back and Draw activities. On the basis of the findings the writer suggests applying Back and Draw activities in the teaching of writing as an alternative solution for English teachers who have similar problems in the teaching of writing. Meanwhile the future researchers are recommended to carry out a study of Back and Draw activities by employing classroom action research at the same or higher level to verify the advantages of this strategy in the teaching of writing with other text types such as descriptive narrative or expository texts.
