An Analysis of the teacher-made english test in the final test of the 2nd semester of 2010/2011 of the first year student of SMPN 1 Kauman, Tulungagung / Winda Fatimah Ratnafuri

Abstrak
Key words Teacher-made test test construction validity reliability practicality item difficulty item discrimination the effectiveness of distracters. This study is intended to find out the quality of the teacher-made English test in the final test of the 2nd semester of 2010/ 2011 of the first year students of SMPN 1 Kauman Tulungagung in terms of test construction content validity reliability practicality item difficulty item discrimination and the effectiveness of each distracter. This research design is descriptive evaluative since this study is designed to evaluate and describe the quality of the teacher-made English test in the final test of the 2nd academic term of 2010/ 2011 of the first year students of SMPN 1 Kauman Tulungagung. The data that are used in this research is from the school document. They are the teacher-made test the blueprint students answer sheets and student s scores. The test consists of fifty items forty-five items are in the form of multiple-choice and five items are in the form of short answer questions. The data were analyzed using both qualitative and quantitative analysis and reported descriptively. The findings of the study are as follows. First teachers sometimes do not follow the rules in developing the test. Secondly the test has moderate content validity. Third the reliability of multiple choice items is in the range of good while the reliability of short answer questions is in the range of moderate. Fourthly the teacher-made test meets the requirements of practicality. Fifth based on the index of difficulty it was found that the good items are only 18% of the total items. Next the index of discrimination is considered to be low because only one item is good. The last there are many distracters which are ineffective. Therefore they need to be revised or changed. Those things happened because the teachers did not have enough knowledge in constructing the test. Based on the findings it can be concluded that the quality of teacher-made English test is considered to be low. Some suggestions are offered to the test constructors in general the English teachers as the test makers and future researchers. The teachers and test constructors in general should learn how to construct a good test by reading book about testing or joining workshop about testing and evaluating. For the English teachers as the test constructors it is suggested that they should improve the quality of their test by following the rules of test construction make the test relevant to the curriculum and apply the concept in developing and improving the test items. And for further researchers it is expected to observe in larger scope of the study in evaluating the quality of teacher-made tests to know how the quality of the test is if some teachers from different school work together.
