Abstrak

One topic in the chemical bonding course at university is intermolecular forces. Intermolecular forces are forces occur among molecules in the solid liquid and gaseous states. The intermolecular forces involve macroscopic microscopic and symbolic representations. Macroscopic representation relates to physical and chemical properties of substances. Microscopic representation relates to formation of the intermolecular forces while symbolic representation relates to representation of macroscopic phenomena using symbol. Intermolecular forces occur in the microscopic level. They are abstract with dynamic characteristic. Intermolecular forces might be easily understood by the learners if they are visualized using dynamic microscopic representation. This representation may be packaged in the form of computer-based interactive multimedia. The purpose of this research was to develop a computer-based interactive instructional multimedia on intermolecular forces topic for chemical bonding course. The development of multimedia adopts 4D model from Thiagarajan Semmel and Semmel which consists of 4 steps. The first step consists of two main activities namely (1) front-end analysis that involve analysis of the concepts for intermolecular forces topic and the needs of students in the learning of the topic and (2) task analysis or the formulation of indicators of learning outcomes. The second step is the design of multimedia will be developed. The third step is the development of multimedia. The fourth step is dissemination of multimedia developed. Prior to the fourth step the multimedia developed is reviewed by three chemistry lecturers and two media experts of State University of Malang. This review is used to find out the appropriateness of multimedia developed based its content and presentation. To identify the effectiveness of multimedia developed is it tried out to 35 students of department of chemistry of State University of Malang. The data collected consist of qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data consists of feedbacks and suggestions for improvement of the multimedia developed given by chemistry lecturers media experts and students of department of chemistry. The qualitative data were collected using multimedia assessment instrument developed based on standard assessment of learning material formulated by Badan Standar Nasional Pendidikan (BSNP). The quantitative data consists of answer of questionary about students perception about implementation of multimedia developed and score of students learning achievement test before and after using the multimedia. The quantitative data were collected using questionary and students learning achievement test. Descriptive analysis and statistic analysis were used to analyzed the collected data. The students learning achievement test instrument consists of 26 items with content validity of 0.99 and coefficient reability measured with Kuder-Richardson 20 of 0.71. The multimedia developed consists of direction introduction learning materials and evaluations. The chemistry lecturers judgment gave 95.5% appropriateness of the content and the media experts judgment gave 88.2% appropriateness of presentation. Revision of multimedia has been made based on suggestions given by the chemistry lecturers and media experts. Based on the the result of experts judgment the revised multimedia may be regarded to be appropriate to be used in the learning of intermolecular forces topic. Increasing of students learning achievement before and after using the multimedia developed was significant. Average scores of intermolecular forces test before and after using the multimedia developed are 12.2 and 20.2 respectively. 83.9% Students declared that the multimedia developed is effective in helping their study of intermolecular forces topic. Based on the results given above it may be regarded that the multimedia developed is effective to be used in the learning of intermolecular forces topic. Further evaluation about appropriateness and effectiveness of the multimedia developed should be conducted for wider dissemination.
