Rewards used by the teacher in teaching English for seventh greaders of SMPN 13 Malang / Novita Amalia

Teachers play an important role in the teaching and learning process in school. Teachers have the following roles in teaching and learning process such as controller conductor monitor stimulator or motivator. As a controller teachers should control and maintain their classes to become more attractive and conducive. As a conductor teachers have to build students enthusiasm and interest in the learning and teaching process in classroom. As a monitor teachers should set up the activities based on the lesson plans modules and courses. As a stimulator teachers have to come up with the reinforcement or treatment to attract students positive learning experience especially in learning a foreign language like English. In order to manage the good classroom in teaching and learning process teachers have to come up with the strategy to build their students motivation and positive learning experience. Reward is one of the strategies to generate students motivation and positive experience in learning English. Based on the preliminary research the teacher applied rewards system in this school in order to overcome the low motivation and participation in English classroom. This study is aimed at collecting information about kinds of reward used by the teacher for seventh graders teacher technique in giving rewards to the students students and teacher s perception toward the use of reward in English classroom in SMPN 13 Malang. The research method was descriptive since it was designed to obtain information concerning reward used by the teacher in teaching English for seventh graders of SMPN 13 Malang. The instruments used are interview guide both for the teacher and students observation checklist and questionnaire. The subjects of the study were seventh graders and the English teacher in SMP Negeri 13 Malang located at Jl. Sunan Ampel 2. The data were collected through four observations. Only one class was observed namely VII H that consisted of 40 students. The data were analyzed classified and presented in accordance with the research problems namely rewards used by the teacher in English classroom for seventh graders. The data were collected using an interview guide observation checklist and questionnaire and then analyzed descriptively. The findings showed that rewards used in English classroom were praise sign of approval and bonus point. Teachers often used praise in the beginning of the class meeting. She used sign of approval in the form of raising thumb and applause to the students when the desired behavior performed in class. She also applied reward in the form of bonus point to encourage students motivation during teaching and learning process. In accordance with the teachers interview it was found that giving reward in English classroom could make an improvement to the students participation and make the class more active. In conclusion reward as one of the reinforcements applied in this school can make teaching and learning process run smoothly. Rewards in the form of giving praise and approval could generate students motivation and participation in English classroom. Therefore it is suggested that teachers adjust the students with the reward system. They have to make sure that the students understand those kinds of rewards. For future researcher it is expected that they conduct studies in rewards not only in the junior high school but also in other levels of education.
