A study on character building in english subject at laboratory junior high school of state university of Malang / Luh Eka Yulianthi.

Abstrak
Key words implementation character building English Laboratory Junior High School of State University of Malang. In 2010 the government have socialized character building in each education unit. Recently this program was implemented by all schools in Indonesia starting from elementary level up to universities because some consideration made by the government. One of the considerations was because religion and civic subject were not optimal yet to teach characters. Teacher still focused on the material rather than the process of transmission moral value. In line with the government s policy to implement character building the teachers as the educator can support character building by inserting character values into the lesson plan and then implement the values through many activities in the class. This study was conducted to describe how the teacher develop and implement character building in English subject at Laboratory Junior High School of State University of Malang. Since this school has implemented character building the researcher decided to conduct the research in this school. The focus of this study was the implementation of character building which conducted by two English teachers at Laboratory Junior High School of State University of Malang. The result of the study was presented descriptively after being classified into related aspects. This study employed a descriptive qualitative design since it was designed to describe the implementation of character building in the form of words rather than numbers. The data was compiled by conducting the interviews observation and asking for the documents consisted of lesson plan. The document which was asked for was the documents made and used by the English teachers from Laboratory Junior High School of State University of Malang. The result of the study showed that in developing the lesson plan that contains character building one of the English teachers did not insert the character values. There were no characters put in the lesson plans. He preferred to implement character values directly than develop character values in the lesson plans. Talking about the implementation of character building both of the teachers could implement character values well in the class. They took characters launched by the government. Since they taught English subject the values of respect for diversity (menghargai keberagaman) courteousness (sopan santun) confidence (percaya diri) independence (mandiri) cooperation (kerja sama) and obedience (patuh pada aturan social) must be implemented in the class. In the lesson plans of grade VII the value of obedience (patuh pada aturan social) was not mentioned but that value was found during teaching and learning activity in the class. In the two classes the researcher also found the additional values such as honesty and environmental care. Those values found suddenly when teaching and learning process. Some suggestions were addressed to the teachers and the future researchers. For the teachers before conducting teaching and learning process they should be able to develop the lesson plans which contain character building. It is also suggested that they vary the activities that can create character values. Teachers also should understand and develop the technique of assessment for character building. The last suggestion is given for the future researchers. They can investigate other elements about character building. Perhaps they can observe the technique and material or some approaches used by the teacher in the class toward the implementation of character building. Thus it will provide more valid information about the implementation of character building in Indonesia which can be used by other researchers as reference to conduct similar topic.
