Using pictorial word puzzles to improve vocabulary mastery of the seventh graders of SMP Laboratorium UM / Mukhamad Aniq Mubarok
Abstrak
Key words Pictorial word Puzzless vocabulary mastery improvement This research was intended to improve the vocabulary mastery of the seventh graders of Laboratory Junior High School of State University of Malang in reading descriptive texts. Based on the preliminary study 26 (81.25%) out of 32 students of grade seventh of Laboratory Junior High School of State University of Malang got score below the minimum passing grade of 75. Moreover it also showed that the students difficulty lay upon the problem of memorizing new vocabulary. To solve the problem pictorial word Puzzles was applied in vocabulary learning. This research was classroom action research. The subjects were class VIIB in the first semester of 2011/2012 academic year. Class VII-B consisted of 32 students with 20 males and 12 females. This research was completed in one cycle. The cycle consisted of four stages planning the action implementing the action observing the action and reflecting the action. In the planning stage the researcher planned and made some preparation for this action. Then he conducted a vocabulary test to measure the student s vocabulary mastery. Next the researcher observed the situation of the implementation of pictorial word Puzzles in the classroom. It took one cycle to meet criteria of success. The criteria of success for product was at least 75% of the students passed the Minimum Passing Grade of 75 in vocabulary test and for process was 2. At least 80% of the students involved in the teaching and learning process. In the cycle the implementation of the action was successful it was proven by the fact that 26 (81.25%) out of 32 students got score above minimum passing grade of 75. The criterion of process was also met because more than 80% students involved in the teaching and learning process. The following are the percentage of students involvement in teaching and learning process for each meeting in the cycle 86.66% for first meeting 93.33% for second meeting 98.33% for third meeting and 100% for the fourth meeting. The procedures which were used by the researcher in teaching vocabulary using pictorial word Puzzless were (1) he played a song at the beginning of the class (2) he distributed the handouts of the materials (3) he asked students to read the handouts and answer the questions based on the texts given (4) he asked students to list verbs or nouns in the text and write them on the whiteboard. (5) he asked students to make groups of six. They were let to choose with whom they v wanted to have groups (6) he informed the students that he would give rewards to the winner of each group the group who won and the students who got the highest score in vocabulary test (7) he gave students 15 minutes to play the game in their groups (8) he gave different forms of Puzzles to each group to determine which group was the winner (9) the researcher and the students discussed the vocabulary used in the game together and showed them the answers of the Puzzles. Based on the result of the research English teachers of Junior High School are suggested to apply pictorial word Puzzles in teaching vocabulary to make the learning activity interesting and fun. The school principle is suggested to facilitate the use of pictorial word Puzzles to improve the student s vocabulary mastery. Further researchers are suggested to conduct a similar study in a different level of school and different genre of text.
