Using mind mapping technique in improving grammar mastery of the tenth graders of SMA Ma\'arif Lawang / Gusti Annisa Fitriani

Abstrak
Key words mind mapping technique grammar mastery improvement This study was undertaken in order to develop the technique in teaching grammar used by a teacher in SMA Ma arif Lawang. In detail this study aims at answering two questions (1) How was mind mapping used as a teaching strategy to improve students grammar mastery and (2) What were students responses towards the use of mind mapping technique at SMA Ma arif Lawang The design of this study was Classroom Action Research (CAR). Based on the preliminary study 19 out of 20 students of grade ten of SMA Ma arif Lawang got score below the SKBM set up by the school for English grammar. Furthermore it also showed that the students difficulty laid upon the problem of constructing sentences using appropriate forms/rules. To solve the problem mind-mapping technique was applied in teaching grammar. The subjects were class X-1 in the second semester of 2010/2011 academic year. Class X-1 consisted of 20 students with 13 females and 7 males. This research was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of four stages planning the action implementing the action observing the action and reflecting the action. The instruments used to collect the data were observation checklist field notes questionnaire and grammar quizzes. It took two cycles to meet the criteria of success. In Cycle I the implementation of the action was not fully success it was proven by 10 (50%) out of 20 student has score under minimum passing grade of 75. However the criterion of process was met because more than 80% of the students were actively involved in the teaching and learning process. Since the criteria of success for product informed that 75% of students had to reach the minimum passing grade of 75 Cycle II was conducted. The implementation of the action was fully success in Cycle II. The students score was better and had met the criteria of success. In Cycle II after the students use mind-mapping technique they made while they were playing the game 20 (100%) out of 20 students got score above minimum passing grade of 75. The criterion of process in Cycle II was met too. To sum up the students scores had measured up the criteria of success determined in this research. The increasing number of students got score above minimum passing grade and the involvement of students in teaching and learning process showed that mind mapping technique was very helpful for improving student s grammar mastery at the ten graders of SMA Ma arif Lawang. Related to the students response toward the use of mind mapping technique the questionnaire showed that all students (100%) agree that mind mapping made them interested in learning English grammar. Moreover they also said that they agreed that mind mapping is successful in motivating them to learn iv English (95%). Therefore the research findings showed that using mind mapping technique during grammar learning could be implemented to improve the grammar mastery of the ten graders of SMA Ma arif Lawang. It is suggested to the English teachers to apply mind-mapping technique to improve their student s grammar mastery. For future researchers it is suggested that the similar research can be conducted by using different level of school.
