Keywords kindergarten kindergartners learning interaction scaffolding As an impact of globalization in which English is widely used children in Asia are studying English now. Not only elementary school children kindergartners in Indonesia also learn English nowadays. Kindergartners who range from 4 to 6 years old generally do not have their own intentions to learn English. Also they have special characteristics that make them a bit hard to handle. However some of them surprisingly can use the language in communication with the teacher or for certain children with parents at home. This qualitative study that uses multi-case study methodology investigates how kindergartners learn to speak English and how home and school environments support kindergartners English learning. The research which was conducted in Surabaya and Gresik involved four kindergartners who could use English for communications as the subjects of the study. The data were collected through observations and interviews. The observations were done while the subjects were learning English at school as well as at home. The interviews involved the teachers and the parents of the subjects. Meanwhile the data were analysed by constant comparisons until saturation was reached to generate a theory. The findings of the study revealed that kindergartners learn English in various activities. There were four commonalities from the four subjects namely they learn to speak English by answering questions listening to a model imitating and repeating and playing games. Among the four ways answering questions was at the top position. The proposition appears that a child will speak English if he or she understands the question knows the vocabulary needed likes the topic as well as the activity and is engaged in an interaction in English. Meanwhile to support a child s English learning in addition to the availability of a special place at home for a child to study facilities such as picture dictionary story books television and videos for children are quite helpful. It is also advisable that parents be involved in the child s learning activities and create a fine atmosphere at home. School supports the kindergartner s learning to speak English if the teacher speaks and teaches English well have close relationship with the children and mostly use English to communicate with them. The school environment will give more contribution if the classroom is designed for interaction and decorated specifically for chidren to learn English.
