A Javanese philosophical reading on Wharton\'s The Age of Innocence / Adyah Pratama Ningtyas
Abstrak
Keywords Javanese philosophy sangkan paraning dumadi existentialism Existentialist and socio-cultural reading has been mostly used to analyze Wharton s The Age of Innocence because those readings emphasize on the states of mind of each charcaters related to the society around them. However this way of reading is not enough to accomodate the values that is subscribed by other readers with different cultural background such as Javanese culture. The study in this thesis uses review of related literature method. Based on the method that is done in this thesis it is concluded that reading this novel through the values of Javanese culture gives a new reading alternative on The Age of Innocence. According to previous studies Newland s motive to keep the engagement and give up his wish to be with Ellen although he can always choose to strive for his wish to be with Ellen is thought to be weak-minded by Cain (2008) and Witherow (2003). Existentialism theory applies in the previous citics conclusion is inadequate with the values of sangkan paraning dumadi in Javanese philosophy. Through the values it is concluded that Newland s decisions are good and right.
