Rethinking, rewording, remaking, analyzing the cultural adjusments in the engglish dubbed version of cardcaptors / Silvy Cinthia Adelia

Abstrak
Key words localization anime (cultural) adjustment Cardcaptors This study concerns itself with analyzing the cultural adjustment(s) performed by the said producers in their effort to localize anime for the new American audiences. In doing so the writer seeks to discover and identify the motive(s) behind the decision to localize as well as the adjustment(s) applied within the case. Cardcaptors is chosen as the object of this study since it is one of the Japanese animated movies that has fallen victim to the early US anime localization. Furthermore the series has built quite a reputation for itself as it has received much attention from the public academics and critics alike due to its conflicting nature. This study is descriptive-qualitative because the findings are presented in the form of description and the data used are not in quantitative terms and in turn it cannot be measured numerically or statistically like those of quantitative research. The findings of this study show that disruption of communication process and genre switching become the possible motives for culturally streamlining Cardcaptors. These motives prompt the producers to adjust the series to the locale s standard and requirement meaning that Cardcaptors is to be directed at young boys to be full of action and male hero(es) and in no way contains romance at any level. Following these characteristics the studio becomes quite selective in picking out which episodes and elements that can and cannot be aired leaving only a good half of the series to make it on air. Romantic elements are tossed out and/or replaced with some excuses of the characters being best friends blood-related or afraid of the other. In addition the title is also changed to be plural and signifies non-gender specific role. These decisions mark a fundamental change in the English dub. Not only has it messed up the original story but Cardcaptors also creates a completely different narrative with several plot holes. Therefore even though the American Cardcaptors possesses a good quality as a localized product as well as sufficient reasons for its deed the adjustment(s) applied to the movie is way off the mark.
