Teachers\'s techniques of introducting new vocabulary to young learners at TK AR Rahman Jombang / Marintan Widi Lestari

Abstrak
Key Words techniques introducing new vocabulary Kindergarten. Critical period hypothesis conveys an idea that the process of foreign language acquisition will more likely be completed if it is begun in childhood. It is due to the fact that children still have optimum brain capacity which enables them to obtain language input from the environment easier than adults. In accordance to that hypothesis English education which starts to be introduced since kindergarten level hold important role to the success of foreign language acquisition of Indonesian children. Moreover based on the critical period hypothesis as well vocabulary as the core component of all language will be optimally absorbed by the learners if it is introduced earlier. Meanwhile the phenomenon of English teaching and learning in kindergarten which is potentially important to foreign language acquisition of Indonesian children is not supported by the sufficient attention from Indonesian Ministry of Education. It is proven from the lack of policy for English teaching and learning in kindergarten level given. In this study the researcher would like to observe how kindergarten s teacher conducts their English class despite of no regulation for them. This study employed a descriptive-qualitative design since it was limited to find out about the technique used by the teacher in teaching new vocabulary. It was conducted in Ar Rahman kindergarten Jombang as TK Percontohan in Jombang. The subjects of this research were the students of B1 Class English teacher and the headmistress of TK Ar Rahman Jombang. Several instruments were used to collect the data such as the headmistress and English teacher interview guide field notes and the relevant document curriculum and certificate of TK Percontohan. The data analysis was done simultaneously with the data collection so once the data was ready the analysis was also completed. From the result of data collection the findings of this study were drawn. The findings of this study found that there were six techniques demonstrated by the teacher. First the teacher used listen- repeat technique. That technique was employed during praying and greeting in every meeting. Second singing songs was demonstrated by the teacher to make the students fun in learning new vocabulary in its lyrics. Third the technique was giving demonstration. Demonstration was used to give clear visualization about new vocabulary that was being learnt. Fourth playing games was demonstrated by the teacher. This technique would build the fun atmosphere for the students so they would not realize that they were studying. Fifth the teacher used pictures. Besides making the learning process fun the students understanding would be better since young learners can learn better if they are seeing the object. Sixth pointing out the things or as also known as ostensive procedure. This technique s purpose was similar to using picture which gave the students clear image of the vocabulary. Besides the six techniques found this study also revealed that the techniques were used by integrating one to other. The use of combinations of techniques accommodated the children into better understanding and also prevented the children from getting bored. Suggestions are addressed to some parties the English teacher of Ar Rahman kindergarten English teacher in general and future researcher. It is suggested to the English teacher of Ar Rahman kindergarten to use more techniques in teaching. The combination of various techniques will strive to understanding of the learners. The suggestion is also addressed to the English teacher in general. It is recommended that they update their knowledge about EYL issues so the way they teach their students will improve. Finally the suggestion also goes to the future researcher. Due to the fact that EYL issues seem to be neglected it is suggested that the future researcher conduct a study in the field of EYL for example on the teaching process of English writing to young learners.
