Improving desriptive writing skills throuhg lay out picture on computer as an interactive media for the seventh graders at AMP Negeri 1 Balikpapan / Ariyanti

Abstrak

Oka M.A. and Dr. Mirjam Anugerahwati M.A. Key words descriptive writing Lay-out Picture interactive media This study was aimed at improving the students writing skills by using LoP on Computer. In this study the LoP on Computer was regarded as a part of teaching process therefore the process of writing is done by the help of LoP on Computer leads the students to improve their writng skills. The subjects of the study were the students of grade VII class G at SMP Negeri 1 Balikpapan. From the preliminary study conducted on their descriptive writing test it revealed that only 7 students (21.88%) got above or equal to minimum passing criterion (80) or KKM (Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimal). It meant that the KKM was not fulfilled. Thus utilizing the LoP on Computer was hoped to improve the students writing ability. The study applied collaborative Classroom Action Research (CAR) in which the reseacher was assisted by a collaborator in designing lesson plan determining the criteria of success and observing the actions and doing the reflection of the data obtained. This study was conducted two cycle in which the first cycle lasted for five meetings. The first four meetings were devoted to perform the process of writing and the last meeting was devoted for writng test. The second cycle lasted for four meetings. The first three meeting were devoted for the process of writing and the last meeting was devoted for writing test The main activity of the teaching and learning process was planning drafting editing and publishing the end product. The planning was done by dragging dropping and designing the available pictures on the provided space in the computer according to the students desire. The drafting was done by telling the designed picture in the written form of descriptive paragraph. The editing could be done by both the teacher and the word processor. The modelling was given in the first meeting in order to lead the students to know how to operate the program and how to write descriptive paragraph. In writing test the students individually wrote a descriptive paragraph based on the provided pictures and the scoring rubric was used to analyze the students writing test. The result of the study showed that the use of LoP on Computer can improve the students ability in writing descriptive paragraph. The percentage of the students achieving the score above or equal to KKM (80) had improved from only 21.88% (7 out of 32 students) in the preliminary study to 62.50% (20 out of 32 students) in Cycle 1 and to 78.13% (25 out of 32 students) in Cycle 2. Besides the aspect of content organization grammar vocabulary and mechanic also improved. Based on the findings of the study it is sugessted for English teachers of SMP Negeri 1 Balikpapan to implement LoP on Computer for teaching and learning descriptive paragraph since it is able to improve the students abilities in writing and it is also able to optimalize the use of ICT at the school. For English teachers at other Junior High Schools the use of LoP on computer is able to improve the students abilities in writing and it is also able to teach recount text. For the future researchers the findings of the implementation of LoP on Computer can be used as reference. The software of LoP on Computer can be added with simple dialogue and music. The LoP on Computer can also be used to teach speaking.
